Root passes take practice and personal touch. I like 3/32 gap and 1/16 rod. Guys I work with use 3/32 gap and 1/8 rod. Everyone passes x Ray. It's all in the way you learned and the way that works for you. Practice is the key tho. One day it'll click and be beautiful

I've never used less than 12 on the argon. Your numbers seem very low. I'd go 15-20. More if you're outside

I've definately successfully tig welded cast with 309 without preheat or post or peening. Still holding today been at least a year ago and the part in question heat cycles frequently. Get some 309 and go for it

Water jet is no go. Tank is existing I'm just modifying it. Looking like I'm gonna try and borrow a plasma cutter. The 6" hole is on top of the tank which is mostly flat. The rest of the holes are going through the sides of the tank so on a curved surface.

I've got filler. I know how to use it. If I have to I will. But it'd all come out nicer if I don't have to. Major issue with plasma cutter is I don't have one. I can borrow one. Idk if my air compressor is up to running it tho

And I've worked on the road installing sanitary piping. Never had this exact scenario tho. Ran a bunch of .065 wall tube but never had to make new holes...

You say a hand drill would be tough. What do you propose I use then? Mag drill isn't really an option being its stainless.

I've never had much luck clamping things to keep them square. They end up square while clamped and even if I let them cool completely before un clamping they still ended up moving. Until I figured out that the sequence in which you weld the joints is extremely important. In my opinion best way to keep...

hole saws
I have a guy wanting me to do some conversions to a stainless cheese making tank so that he can make beer in it. Need to add several 2" 3" 1.5" and 6" fittings to it. Being that it needs to be sanitary, im thinking a hole saw would be the best way to make holes so it's a nice edge...

You won't be able to walk on a job with certs from a school no. They'll still certify you in house. But they help you at least get to the point of taking a weld test for someone. All grades of people go to welding school. People even finish school being unable to pass a certification. I personally got...

Get certs if the school offers them. You'll have to re cert in house wherever hires you. But with no experience straight out of school a cert or two will help get your foot in the door
