Quick question regarding Miller engine driven welders with the Onan engines in them (or any other small single or twin cylinder engine).
How often (how many hours) do you pull the heads on your Onans and decarb the engine?
Reason I ask is I've got an Onan that has about...

Sheet Metal Welding with Stick Questions
This is probably a stupid questions, but is it possible to weld thin sheet metal with a stick welder without making a mess?
I've got a Miller Dialarc HF and it is set-up for stick (maybe TIG one of these days) and have considered using this welder for welding mower decks - 11 to 12 gage...

Generators, Stick Welders & Tractors
I am getting ready to build platform for a generator that will hang off the front of my old Wheelhorse tractor (they use to sell something like this) such that it can be driven by a belt from the engine. I have a couple of these old tractors and one of them is 20 hp. With that tractor, I can run a...

Arc Flash & Distance Question
At my day job, the welding guys do a really good job of keeping their arcs behind curtins, but every once and a while, from a distance you can see an arc flash and your eyes try to look in that direction - which of course I don't.
My question is - is there some kind of formula that causes...

I bought a Dialarc HF, which I gather is pretty much the same machine without the high frequency for TIG. It is a might machine! Smooooth arc!
I paid about $250 for mine, but got a deal as it was rusty, dented and had a loose power chord, which made for intermittent operation. I cleaned...

Overhead Welding & BWE Helmet Question
Reading through the owners manual for my new Miller Big Window Elite welding helmet I found this quote, "Do not weld in the overhead position while using this helmet."
Why?
Just courious.
Thanks!

So far so good. I laid down a few beads of stick weld and found the autodarkening to be so fast that I can't tell when it goes dark. Looking through the lens, it's kind of like this: I see the end of my welding rod, I scratch it on the metal and am welding. I see daylight the whole time. I know...

I've read a lot of stuff here and at the Hobart forum about the Miller Big Window Elite helmet and much to my surprise, my Wife gave me one for Christmas, stars & stripes to boot!

I'll give this Kano Kreen a try - easier than disassembling the engine! The previous owner said that he had the engine serviced by some knuckle head mechanic and they overfilled the oil. That's when it started smoking and he just lit it sit for a lot of years.
This thing not only smokes,...

Hey Stick Rod,
I'm still here, just lurking
Reason I ask about the Onan here is that there is very little info I can find about these engines. I have heard they are bullet proof, super reliable, but I have one with 38 hours on it and it is puffing smoke like a freight...

Onan Powered Millers - Anyone Used One?
Anyone used a late model Miller welder/generator that is Onan powered? More to the point, one with a P220 engine?
How's the engine holding-up?
Thanks!

I bought a used Dialarc HF. It is both stick and tig. I paid about $250 for mine, beat out the dents in the sheet metal, new paint, decals and cables - looks like new! I'm new at this welding, so I've been doing stick and when I master that, I'll try the tig.
I have seen on e-bay the...

Vertical Up vs Down Questions
When vertical Mig welding 3/16" thick plate into 'T' or 'L' shapes, should the joints be welded vertical up or down & why?
Would the same technique apply for both Mig and stick?
Thanks!
