Nothing wrong with using the 6011 rods, they run fine on dc-elec+[reverse polarity. Its all in the operator.Just make sure you burn the root .
It is usually 6010 rods for the root and 7018 fill and cover, but 6011s will burn in just fine.

Order the Miller matic calculator.it will tell you all the wire speeds, gas to use and voltage for solid wire ,flux-core,stainless and alum. Its is a starting point, you will still tweak your settings a little ,but this will put you in the ballpark.

How wide was your gap?I would not have the two plates more than 1/4 inch apart. You have to make sure you tie the edges into the backing plate.Really burn it in .I always liked open root tests, you can see right away if you got it or not.
On the cap.turn your heat down when tying in the sides.You...

  • If you can clean the metal up a little and have pretty tight fitup,I would crank the amps up and burn some 5/32 -7018s[try 155 to 175 amps to start]
but 1/8 or 3/32-7018s will work just fine, just need to make more passes.

With the mig,you could switch to flux-core wire and crank...

You may want to call a company like Eutectic ,they should be able to help your with the correct filler rod or wire.Your LWS could also be a help.
When ever I run into anything with a lot of unknowns ,I always fall back on the Eutectic 680 stick rod.So far it has worked on steel,stainless,cast...

The Sewer guy should have a air tester.Check LEL and check for hydrogen sulfide,it dulls your sense of smell and will put to to sleep [forever] before you realize something is wrong.
Lots of jokes made about this type of work, and I am guilty of it also, but it can be a diaster waiting to happ...

replied to Help on Amp setting
How thin is thin?1/8 -6011-try 80 amps to start. You may find you need to turn it down a little more.It will be a trial and error thing. Also get some 3/32 6011s,around 50 to 55 amps, these may be a little easier to control.

    good luck

I am glad you found the problem,I was just gonna go out and start beating my 301 with a baseball bat, actually I did almost the same thing when hooking up my spoolgun to it a while back, easy to do when in a hurry.

  • Flux-core gives you better penatration, burns in a little deeper. But it does also make for a little more cleanup,a wire wheel on a grinder will take care of that.I like it and its all I use on my mig machine.
