You can get away with a wood cutting blade and use a wax stick for lube. But you'll have to clean off the wax. A better way is to use a blade designed for cutting aluminum, such as this tenryu blade:

Your blade life will deteriorate. If you are cutting more than a few pieces of SS, it would be in your best interest to 'pony up' and buy the correct blade. There are blades made specifically for SS, or aluminum as well for that matter.

I think your best bet will be a flush-mounted latch. Prior to backpacking in the Denali National Forest in Alaska, we were issued bear-proof, food containers.
