Norm if it's low pressure and non code butt them tight or with a slight gap and weld them till they are full . It shouldn't be to hard if you are rolling them with mig. Just make sure the cap is above wall and you should be good. If it was code work I would sugest you let someone who does it for a living...

Always rely on your experience and training and NEVER listen to a fitter!! They think that they know everything and they worked with a guy kinda crap. If they knew they'd be doing it. I always hot pass everything no matter what time it is you can always have a break later. Think of it this way is coffee...

When you open a sealed box of rod you have a specific time limit to use the rod's or put them in the oven. If your shop is putting every rod in the oven (even stainless) that's your shop's policy(Probably to keep guy's or gal's from using cold rod's) Up here when it's -45c if you take a hot rod out...

I would tend to lean towards a bead defect (either porosity or bubbles ) are you running uphill all they way or downhand bead and hot pass and uphand fill and cap? Just because the x-ray hand says it's porosity dosen't nessasarily mean he's always right. Jef...

Solar flux is entirely adequate for what you are doing. They use it in the pulp and paper industry for x-ray quality welds.
