Whichever shade you use the lens provides the same UV protection level, so if you go to a lighter shade it's just letting more light in, not UV. Another vote for the CK superflex torches. The CK230 will get you up to 300 amps and is 100% duty cycle on both AC and DC. I have this torch with the rigid head but I would buy the flex if I could do it over.

Controlling distortion is a function of the steps you take in welding, fitup and fixtures etc...not the machine itself. So find a suitable machine in your budget and go for it....
