Thanks Mac, both of your answers are equally crappy news for me. Hopefully it doesn't get any bigger, but like you say, probably time to start shopping around.

Dark spot on edge of digital elite LCD
I had this weird dark spot appear on the edge of my LCD today (helmet is one of the first digital elites, so it’s about 10 years old). Has anyone seen this, and if so do you think it can be repaired or should I start looking for a replacement. It isn’t in my line of sight yet, but I’m a little...2 Photos

Miller Fab gloves, some years later.
These days it's not often we get to brag about how a certain item, whether it be jeans or a welder, impresses upon us a high level of quality and value (read that as cheap enough that a welder will still buy it). Usually our purchases are educated guesses about what our chances are that 'such and such'...1 Photo

I tried to reply about your super user PM regarding this issue but my PM system doesn't seem to be working. This is my reply message as follows:...

75% Argon, 25% Helium GMAW-S stainless?
I was talking to a fellow the other day who told me that at work they use a 75Ar / 25He blend on stainless with solid wire. I asked if he meant tri-mix but apparently not, and didn't know much more about the "why" of it all. In googling it, I'm finding very little mention of this and I always...

OUCH!!!! That's one of those free perks that you won't read in the miller sales flyer when advertising their excellent HF starts! Being on the wet British Columbia coast, sometimes we'd have to resort to changing rods with our armpits since they were the only parts still dry....

Ever wet yourself over a welder?......
This may have been around already but I just stumbled upon a really nice pipeliner conversion on youtube. Just about had to go have a moment by myself!
Of course now the real problem is trying to resist buying another redface and "borrowing" my neighbour's little diesel trac...

Thanks. Same to you. I was pleasantly surprised when you replied to this post, it has been a while!

Thank you sir for the quick education. It's being done in the shop so I'll stick with the solid wire. Again, many thanks.

Cost comparison between gmaw and dual shield?
Has anyone here taken a look at how the numbers break down when deciding to use a 71 dual shield or outer shield wire vs a solid er70? I'm looking at a total deposition of roughly 105lbs filler material, and I'm not sure if the benefits in speed of the dual shield outweigh the costs, both look like...

That's an ugly one, think it will stay together? I had a similar failure to address on a hitachi 400 (or 450?? or was it a 600? It's been a while). Customer was using a 6' long single tooth ripping shank in rock. When it finally let go the stick pin pulled the ears on the boom out just like it was uncurled...

What are you guys using for settings running 1/16" aluminum wire on 1/2 - 3/4 plate?
Hi guys, it looks like I have a welding test coming up for a company. I don't know a lot about their alloys used, just that they're running lincoln push pulls, and and I believe they're running 1/16" solid, probably 5356 since its all specialty structural. Most of my aluminum work has been tig....

Well, if it is cast then that is something different than I have experienced on rippers. I can tell you how I welded the ones I've come across. The rippers I have worked on were cut from solid high-alloy plate, such as a high grade T series or AR series. I preheated to 225F and maintained inter-pass...

When I was first learning tig I had a habit of running too hot. A little later I was building a hydraulic tank for a customer and had the same type of thing as you, porosity that wouldn't seem to go away. Took the problem to my mentor and he let me in on the fact that I was cooking the steel. Basically,...
