if you take the test on 3/8 plate you'll be good up to 3/4, take the test on 1" you be good for unlimited, I took the 1" 7018 3g, like always clean chip take your time good luck

I think a good drill press and some high stands to hold the material will do better for you unless you plan on doing heavy repair in witch case to steel max mag drill I found to be one of the best around, it self lubes down the center of the angular bit, the magnet holds at half power till the switch...

If there is nothing mounted over the top of the welder you can try and put a straight pipe with a rain cap flapper out the top instead of the curved outlet, shotting the exhaust strait up instead of head level when on a truck, might be the cheapest and easiest cure for your problem
