  • I've machined both 6061 and 7075. 7075 is a much harder alloy to machine in my experience. With heating up aluminum to the melting point you lose hardness, which means that it should be heat treated afterwords. And that applies to any aluminum alloy. If it were my project, I wouldn't do anything...

  • 6061 is a real soft alloy in fact it's used as little as possible in aircraft. 2024 is the standard alloy for most airframe structures. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on 7075. 7075 is used for aircraft landing gear structures.
