James, let's see how much tigging I will be able to do. If not much, I can wait till the next tent sale (March). If I do a lot, I'll buy it much sooner!!!

John, I didn't know NEXGEN made a 4 sensor one!!! This is embarressing, but I went to buy more safety shields for my speedglass, and found out the chin brace I've had for 4 years was my cause for my respirator not fitting!!! Took it off and it works fine!! Gosh, I thought I would have to wear my $40 special, since I start tomorrow night and we have to wear respirators the whole 12 hours!!!

Actually, since I'm trying some tig now, I broke down and bought a 4-sensor NexGen at the tent sale. I think it's in the same price range as the BWE.

We just had a tent sale, but didn't have the money to buy one. I'll get a BWE as long as it has room for my respirator underneath it

you should be really happy with the BWE. i love mine, never been flashed. the new ones have a grind mode, wish mine did but hey still very happy with it.
the price thing is a bummer, but you get what ya pay for. and for a long tern item like a hood, so far mine has been $37 a year and getting cheaper every year.

jonnymag, he saves about 3" of plastic around the lens and rivets the leather to that.

    Pancake

THANKS JAMES I have a co-worker with that helmet! I told him I thought it was something for people that had some kind of eye problems!!! He's from guam or the phillipines or someplace like that and he said all the pipefitters wear 'em...Side plate helps shield the face from the sparks/slag.

    Bert,

Why is he cutting it out? The Jackson guy at the tent sale was also selling removable cartridges (autodark and nexgen). Couldn't he just mount those directly on the leather hood?

What are you talking about pancake hood? Show us a pic, eh? Ran into my old classmate, he was buying the Jackson Boss, and going to cut it out and rivit it to a leather hood. Never heard of that done either!

the new Miller BWE's have a grind mode.

i hear you about the grind mode. i wish Miller had put it in their BWE sooner so i would have got it with mine. but at the going rate for the new BWE with grind mode i think i'll stick with my old one for a wile. its about 6 years old and still going strong on the factory battery's so i don't think its going to break and give me a reason to upgrade to the new one, thats a good thing.......i suppose. yea it is, i could never afford a new one now. it would really put a dent in any chance of getting a MM212.

I have looked at the speedglass in catalogs, but have never seen one on the shelf. They look kind of small for overhead. I have and use a 27 year old flip front jackson (it was the very first composite hood they made and I got it for the weight). I have a fibremetal I got for wear on a hardhat that is virtually identical to the old jackson. Now that I don't have to wear a hardhat to weld I mostly use my pancake (it's handmade so I can't tell you who made it, and at least 15 years old) with a shade ten auto lens. I have much fewer headaches using it, there is no glare from any source, and it will fit in places no conventional hood will fit. I am actually considering the new Jackson Boss because of the 6 ounce hood weight, largest viewing area in an autodark, and the 3 in 1 capability. I pretty much have to grind every weld down flush and smooth and use cut off wheels on a 4 1/2 inch grinder a lot and it's a real pain switching back and forth.
