    Just pull out the string and replace it with a thin TIG rod, coathanger, or whatever.

    Are you talking about a hooded jacket? I used an old millitary jacket that had stiff wire in the hood. It conformed after bending bent manually to the shape of my welding helmet and when I raised the helmet the hood raised as well as fell with the helmet...It worked well for -36c conditions.
