Frame for Coolant Mist Tank on DoAll Saw

For this project I am fabricating a frame to hold the coolant mist tank on the DoAll vertical saw. The best place for the tank is above anything that is being cut, so that the lines and tank don’t interfere with the stock that is being fed through the saw. The previous owner of the saw installed a piece of flat bar stock to mount a light. I decided to add the frame to the top of the existing flat bar stock. The red arrow points to the bar stock in the following picture. The light itself is in the back of the saw so it isn’t visible in this picture.

The first step was to weld two long pieces of angle iron to the top of the bar stock.

The next step is to weld short pieces of angle iron to the ends of the long angle iron pieces to complete the frame. I welded the frame from the outside and left a gap between the pieces to get good penetration without having weld on the inside of the frame, which would interfere with the tank.

After welding up the end pieces, I ground the welds flush with the surface of the frame and painted it.

As you can see, grinding the welds flush made them disappear.

Painting the frame made it appear to be part of the saw.

And the last picture shows the coolant tank mounted on top of the new frame on the DoAll saw. As you can see, the bottom of the frame provided a nice surface to mount the magnetic base of the nozzle holder.

The mister system doesn’t require too much air. I just have a small air compressor. In use the mister makes a hissing sound, like a leak on an airline. You mix a few ounces of concentrated coolant to a gallon of water, so the mix is mostly water. In addition to acting as a cutting fluid, the other advantage of a mist system is removing the heat from the cutting area, which really extends the life of cutting tools and saw blades.

I was looking to put a mister on the Bridgeport and I still might, but I wasn’t sure if I needed to regulate the air pressure down or if I could just plug it into the system that’s charged at 125psi.

I just plug mine into my shop air ~90 psi. The mister has a needle valve to cut down the air flow.

Cool man! That makes it easy. The Bridgeport is right by the air tank, which happens to have several unused ports, so I can tap a port and be off! Plus I think with the right fluid if will helps keep the table in better shape. In this humidity, everything rusts so fast. Just surface rust, but still irritating.
