advice, pedestal shelf for bench grinding wheel support.:

hi I have space problems in my shop therefore I find it difficult to place the workstation for the bench grinding wheel, a friend of mine suggested using wall brackets and creating a cantilevered shelf, another to create a pedestal with a base, perhaps using an old 17-inch wheel rim or a big and heavy truck flywheel and fit a tube or a large metal box section onto it, what would you suggest? thank you.

If you have wall space I would make a cantilevered shelf. This would take up least anount of space. If you use a pedastal mount it is easy to move as needed but the base needs to be heavy enough to stay in place or bolted down.

The shelf is nice in that it is easy to sweep under and there is nothing to obstruct your feet while you grind. Just be sure not to set your wall on fire. The pedestal is nice in that you can move it to another location if you so desire. The pedestal must be stable(I don't think the one in the video is stable enough) but still must not obstruct your feet while grinding. Really depends on your specific situation.

I would like to do something in between I have a heavy wheel double that for sharpening the cutting edges for tools such as lathe milling boring machine, it is very heavy, I would not want it to unhinge with vibrations from the wall, if you have some photos to use as an example , thanks sorry for the inconvenience.

ID:	619588 All that stuff looks nice but it works terrible . I like that stuff on a bench, doesnt even have to be huge but need someplace to sit a tool down or handfull of parts. Same for some of the floor posts, puts the vise out in the middle of nowhere.

I also very modestly created tools with waste material for my modest workshop, now I have to evaluate the best and most functional solution, thanks again.

When you are starting,,,,, salvage is good, prototype on a shoestring with salvage is good and some of the best fit pieces I have were given to me from scrap. Some turned out better than I might have designed and while some look sort of crude they worked so well or well enough they never got replaced. A lot of the custom never did work out right, to fancy and you have to make changes. Now days I still do paint and finish but often wait till its in use or has some bugs worked out, has been upgraded or changed.

the workshop is not open to the public I do chores for friends and acquaintances I should retrain it and bring it up to standard, but too many regulations too many laws it would be uneconomical to open now I wait for better times Click image for larger version

Sorry I don't have any pics cause I'm not using it anymore but what I did before was I had an old diesel rim for a pedestal base with wheels mounted on the side so I could tip and roll it wherever then I had 2x2 3/16( or 1/4 can't remember) square for the post then I mounted multiple things on plates with lil sections of reciever tubing so I could use multiple things on that pedestal I had a bench grinder a vise a small anvil tubing roller etc so I could mount whatever and tip it back on the wheels and roll it wherever I needed it I also had lil sections of 2x2 mounted around the rim so the grinder anvil and vise sat around the base
