This is not something that can be bought. Machine shop is looking into making new ones. The whole cutting machine was designed and built by a past family member in house. No drawings or notes have ever been found. Reverse engineering is the only way for the current generation running the business. It always amazes me how the generation born in the early 1900s just built things. They had an idea, got busy and made it work.

What is the price and availability of a new one for price comparison?

Well even if they make the new ones they can’t skip either hardening it or using some sort of tool steel. But that sounds about right....”just send it out to be rebuilt....” without any idea what it’ll take or how much time skilled men will have to invest in both ability and effort to do so. But it still sounds like a fun project.

After talking with machine shop it's on hold until he discusses with the end customer. The Brutus wire will be to soft so it would have to be one of the midas wires. One is 59 rockwell and the other is 64. We are thinking the 59 will be it as the knives are 60-62 as tested. Then it could only be ground and not cut. I told him it's a time and material job for the first one and he agrees on his end also. It could go well or a disaster and the customer needs to know this up front. It may be money not well spent for him. Machine shop is looking into making new ones also.

I really like that Brutus rod. I keep some of the Brutus stick rod around for tough jobs. I welded a spring hanger back to a banjo housing on a loaded garbage truck a while back, that was a permanent repair for what the customer just wanted, which was to make it to the landfill to offload.

I hope the machine shop decides to follow through with this job. Looks like a cool project.

Talked to Rockmount yesterday. Very helpful people. Discussed their Midas H12 which is probably to hard to machine afterwards, then discussed their Brutus wire and we both agreed that was probably the best for this job. No good answer for what the customer wants as it really should be just welded up, remachined and then heat treated. They want to skip a step which may not be feasable. Now I am waiting for the machine shop to call and see what they want to do.

Rockmount does sell small amounts down to two pounds. He gave me ball park per pound pricing of 135ish for the Midas and 75ish for the Brutus. That would be 1/16" tig rod.

Exactly............carbide even has a tough time with that...

Rockmount also has a tech guy on staff that is really sharp with this sort of stuff. I wish I could remember his name....but who knows, he may be retired by now. Anyway, if you tell him what you’re working on he can generally give you some solid guidance. Might be good to know if that machine shop plans to turn it back to its original dimensions if they plan to grind it too. Some hard facing is not machinable.

You might want to touch base with Rockmount. Their Midas TIG rod might do the trick. I have used some of their products successfully, but not this one.

    Midas TIG

    Tool Steel
    OVERVIEW

Tool steel alloys for all types of tool steel refacing and repair, even when subsequent heat treatment is not an option. For cavities and molds that heat during use, blanking dies, cutting edges, wear surfaces and broaches. Excellent for mower blade resurfacing where impact is likely.
    KEY FEATURE

59 – 64 RC products that are air, oil or water hardening. These alloys respond to heat treatment like the base metal and are wear and shock resistant and commonly outwear the original base metal.

    Cutter wheel hard facing?

This is the anvil part of a rotary cutter for a paper product. It has lines where the knife part crashed into it. It is heat treated carbon steel is all the info I have. I was asked by the machine shop if I can build up the anvil part by 1/16" minimum with hard face. Not sure what is best to use? Can't find much info online for tig wire. I usually go to Arczone for specialty wire but I don't see any listing for hard face. Thought I would ask here before I call on Monday. I don't want to do more harm than good.
