  • Small backhoe cylinder repair

Rod eye broke out on boom cylinder and pin is bent. Original weld is still good. Broke at grease fitting hole. Having machine shop make a new one. I'll cut off old eye pc and weld on the new one. From the customers picture at the job site it looked much worse. Pleasantly happy when it got here.

Almost looks a bit undersized for the main boom cylinder, but I guess there has to be a breaking point somewhere, may as well make it easy to get to!

That I believe is an aftermarket Backhoe attachment..........not to say that there is anything wrong with them, but the user's always think it's bigger & stronger than it really is...

Took me awhile to realize why the bolts and pins were all US vs metric like on the tractor. Then the light went off in my head, aftermarket made by Woods.

I'm guilty also. "It'll be fine because there is a safety factor engineered in, right?"

Is this for a home owner or a contractor?

Well this job is done. Not the way I planned. Picked up new cylinder end, cut off old and welded it on, simple. Not so fast. Machinist made it out of a pc of 4140 or something similar. I didn't think anything of it. Welded it on, slip pin in to check that it is still straight, pin seized, pressing it out the new pc split. Not happy. Cut off again, took a pc of 1-1/2" hot rolled and drilled it on my drill press and welded it on. Should of done that in thw first place. Moral is don't put pin in while still hot, I knew better. But then maybe this would of broke in service anyway.

To line it up I extended the cylinder to keep heat away from seals. Inserted bar stock into both ends and measured between them. Also used a square to check to rod. Tacked it while checking. When I was comfortable it was tacked good I welded it out with tig, let cool, run drill through again and used die grinder as needed to get pin to slide through nicely. Drilled and tapped grease fitting last on the second pc. New pin I made is 4140 hardened.

original pc looks like it split at grease fitting hole first like my failed one, then peeled off cylinder rod.

I like your set up for keeping everything straight. I always enjoy following your posts. I am not familiar with the process for welding rod eyes on cylinders. Do you think mild steel will be strong enough for the rod eye?

Woods bought Wain-Roy around 1990 or so. I have the 54B100 Sherman Power Digger (Wain-Roy) backhoe attachment on my 8N. It is the bulky grandfather of the mini excavator.

My backhoe is supposed to be red.

Man, that’s the kind of thing that makes me throw whatever it is I’m holding across the shop.
