  • exhaust pipe repair

Ford 7700 tractor. Exhaust pipe between the turbo and mufller is rusted and leaking to the point where it started to melt the plastic fan shroud. After I took it apart I found it had another hole closer to the turbo. Why fix it? I originally wanted to take the pipe back to my shop and copy it but he said it would take to long and needed it up and running as quick as I could. To order a new pipe would take a little while to get plus cost $780 +/-. Tractor is used everyday and one of their other tractors is down at this time so it is needed. I thought about making a new one on site but figured without a table would be difficult to keep it aligned and did not have access to all the bends I would need. I pulled the pipe off and proceeded to just wrap it. I figured that was the easiest and quickest way. I brought chunks of exhaust tube with me that I had laying around and luckily I had one the right size and even had a bend. I sliced and formed to fit, then welded it all up. Welded in many pcs. but should last a long time. Pic 1 is after pipe was removed. It goes from turbo, around pump and up behind air filter. Pic 2 and 3 are holes in pipe. Pic 4 is melted fan shroud.

Started by slicing a bend I brought with me in half and then sandwiched it on the pipe and used many tacks to weld it on. Pic 3-- Corner done. Last pic--For the other bend I wasn't so lucky as I had to slice a straight section and make it fit. Should have made it longer as I had to add another 2 inches to hit weldable material.

Had to add to the upper side of the first bend also so I felt comfortable I was at good metal. Here it is completed and back installed on the tractor. It snakes its way around with not much clearance so it isn't a simple two bend pipe and also has a bracket at the top that has two bolts to line up. All done remove, repair, re-install plus repair the turbo heat shield that was rusted off, 5-1/2 hrs.

Very nice, thinking on your feet and getting it done with what you had. Hope the farmer appreciates the level of skill and experience needed to do what you did.
