You could probably use some sort of ball bearing (sometimes called Saginaw) screw in place of the hydraulic jack, but it would cost a LOT more.

My first thought is get out a pencil and paper. Second is do some thinking. Third Engineering. Forth design to paper. Followed by material choice, purchase and fabrication. Give extra thought to engineering. Post pictures.

My first thought was adapting a hi lift jack to raise and lower the boom.

Then I thought why not just use a hydraulic jack like every engine hoist has?

Why do you not want hydraulics?
Maybe adapt something like this?

After re-reading your post I think you should just copy your second pic which is a hand crank. Why reinvent the wheel?Last edited by MMW; 02-22-2019, 05:28 AM.

how to build a small mobile mechanical hydraulic crane for a workshop
Hi, I would like to build a small hydraulic mobile workshop crane, sturdy lightweight, manageable agile in the maneuvers to be made of steel profiles, if possible instead of the hydraulic piston would I put a mechanical device to raise and lower the arm some ideas?
