    I just looked and figured it would take about 2 hrs. fooling around and then added 25 for good measure on junk like grinding wheels and drill bits or whatever. You're too cheep.

    The last step was mounting the plow back on the truck.
    The large cotter pin on the right attaches the lower plow frame to the truck frame bracket. The cotter pin to the left goes in the stub shaft, which is the one that we repaired. This cotter pin keeps truck frame bracket link from falling off the stub shaft on the upper plow bracket.

    I did have trouble opening up the existing hole in the shaft after I got some weld on the entrance to the hole on both sides.
    My first approach was trying to drill the hole open.
    The drills caught and broke.

    My next attempt was a carbide burr.
    The burr caught and broke.

    My final approach was to use a small grinding stone on my Foredom shaft grinder.
    This worked fine, but I did wear out the stone.

    I can be quite competitive repairing parts of snow plows, because the parts are pricey.
    My customer did want it in service as soon as possible with snow predicted for the next weekend.
    A new lift frame costs $366.69, but you would still have to strip the lights, hydraulic hoses and cylinder from the old one.

    The following picture shows wire brushing the stub shaft to remove the rust.

    I built up the ends of both of the stub shafts with weld.

    Then I drilled a new hole for the cotter pin.
    The following picture shows the cotter pin in place in the new hole of the newly built up shaft.

    Western Snow Plow Stub Shaft Repair

    My customer just purchased a used Western snow plow. The pump worked fine, the blade had a lot of life left and the hoses were new last year. The only problem was that the stub shafts that attach the upper plow bracket to the truck frame bracket were cut off for some reason.
    The location for stub shaft that needed to be repaired can be seen in the following exploded view.

    The 1st stub shaft was so short that it even lost the cross hole for the cotter pin, so there was no way to keep the truck frame bracket link from falling off the stub shaft of the upper plow bracket.

    To get the plow to my house, my customer had to ratchet strap around the truck frame bracket link to hold it onto the stub shaft. As you can see in the following picture the stub shaft is just barely flush with the truck frame bracket link.

    in the second picture truck frame bracket link was removed so that you can see the end of the first stub shaft, which was so short that there was no longer a hole for the cotter pin.

    On the 2nd stub shaft there was only a little bit of shaft beyond the hole to support the cotter pin. My customer wanted this shaft also built up because he was worried that the cotter pin might pull out through this thin wall on the end of the stub shaft. This picture shows the truck frame bracket link on the 2nd stub shaft.
