    Heavy duty bearing races in trucks & trailers........if the bearing is already shot.......allot of time can be saved by just running a bead a 180 degrees apart ..........falls right out....

    I have that same inside puller thing. They never seem to work very well. Maybe I'll add heat next time.

    I don't feel like typing much so I'm going to keep it short, sweet and to the point. It's not magic it's knowledge being applied.

    It's the result of restrained expansion. Iron and steel will when heated expands in all directions and when cooled shrink in all directions. While restraining it's expansion in one direction, it will still contract from that direction when cooled. It's condition is said to be "upset" as a result.

    That my friends is the why.

    This is done all the time to remove worn steel bushings in excavator booms. A pass or two inside the race with your stick welder and whatever rod happens to be in it loosens the bushing.

    A few years back I welded for a large compressor company. The guy who rebuilt the screw compressors would bring me the rotors to weld a bead on the race to remove it. I would run a bead and he would stand them up and the race would just fall off...Bob

    Yup, I usually just run a bead completely around the inside of the race with 6011 and let it cool. Works pretty slick.
    Nice job helping out the jogger.

    Here is what the inside of the outer race looked like with the TIG melted spots. The ID of the hub wasn't affected.

    I used the "Solid backup" shown in picture #2 and the race came right out as shown below:

    This also didn't work, so I used a TIG torch with a small diameter conventional nozzle to melt the outer race in spots and allow it to shrink as the metal cooled off. I didn't actually add any metal. The TIG setup is shown below:

    Next I tried to use a more rigid backup to prevent the spokes from acting like springs, which reduced the impact load as shown below:

    Shrink a bearing by welding to remove

    The wheel bearing on my customer's baby stroller for jogging failed and all of the balls came out leaving the outer race a heavy press fit in the hub. The bike store said that they would have to grind through the outer race to remove it, but they were too busy to deal with it.
    I used an ID puller to grip the ball race of the bearing because the bearing was up against a shoulder and I couldn't get behind it. I tried with the setup shown below but it wouldn't budge.
