This is EXACTLY what I did when I built my utility trailer........except I didn't need to rent one due to the simplicity of the trailer that I was making.
    Here's what I did:
1)researched trailer builds and dimensions / ratios on-line and took notes
2)Researched each component for best quality
3)Called trailer manufactures with a list of questions
    4) Drew my custom plan out using graphic software (or just use graph paper and a ruler)
5)Went to trailer sale lots with my drawing and a tape measure (took all dimensions) labeled on drawing
6)Made a materials list with estimated cost (BTW....it's cheaper to just buy one! HA!)...but you can make a better one than what's on the lot (tubing vs angle....e.tc....
7)Shopped for best deals on metal, and components (Orschlens had GREAT deals during bucket day sales!.....cuppler, wires, lights, fenders, axle...etc)
8)Bought metal, trailer components, and welding supplies....etc
9)Built trailer without help over Memorial Day Weekend (3 days of VERY little sleep)
    10) Got trailer inspected at official station ........ and...it FAILED! I didn't put marker lights on it! ARGH!
    11) Fixed my failed inspection issues and went back to pass.
    11) Generated Title and SS# and etc at DMV
    12) Parked it in garage for 6 months without use because I didn't want to scratch it. (you should see it now) I've put that thing through HADES!
    13) Posted on Millerwelds.com in order to help you out......or at the least...... get unpleasant feedback from trolls. J/K! ....maybe.

Here's an old video / slide show style.... that shows my build.
