Fixed a broken skeg on a 1988 Mercury Classic 50.

Thing is it was broken over winter storage where I keep the boat. Didn't ***** just let the guy know. $100 Canadian peso's for the winter.

It is the bottom portion of the lower drive unit.

The skeg is a fin on a boat or boat engine that controls the direction in the water flow .
A skeg is also used to protect a prop from grounding out and hitting a object.
I would have a TIG welder repair that skeg. The metal could have a high zinc content if the metal glows green when striking a arc on it with a TIG torch.
Welding stores sell special filler wires for this.
If it glows blue or red when striking an arc use 4043 filler wire.
I would make a quick call to the manufacturer and they may know what to use.
IT is a long shot but I have had good results calling the manufacturers.

He has already made the repair.
Mercury recommends using 4743 when you can and 4043 otherwise......when they were giving out advise on skeg repair.
There are not any drives made from zinc based alloyed castings. Mercury is 356 and everyone else is basically the same.
If you buy rod for zinc based and attempt to weld it with that crap you will fail miserably!
4943 works beautifully on skegs. It has caused 4043 to become virtually obselete.
