  • Closer recommendation for heavy dumpster gates

We just had some dumpster gates installed by a local company. The doors are around 2000lbs each, roughly. There are two doors. One has a slide bolt, latches into ground. the other is on a magnetic lock. The stop failed and recently had the door swinging around in the wind. We had specified some kind of closer in the specs. But the installer is claiming there are no such products on the market. The reasoning behind using a closer was to keep gate closed and locked in event of someone failing to close door, or a power loss. It would also prevent wind from catching the doors. Of course the door on the slide bolt would have nothing to stop at with closer.

Alternatively, i thought of a damper.

    Any ideas???

How about some pic's. There are a bunch of different types of closers for gates, chain drive, screw type rams both electric and hydralic. Try McMaster Carr or Grainger catalogs on line

Let me see if I can get some pics. Not looking to do automatic opening gate. Just a closer like you would find on exterior doors (36x84 door)

This might work for you. If the door is balanced well an under rated closer should work OK

Have you considered gravity self-closing hinges similar to this design but built heavier.

If you look closely you can see how they are made here:

The doors are already installed. so I don't think replacing the hinges is an option. I have never seen a heavy duty hing with that design.

              Any other ideas?

What about using a cable pulley(s) and a weight?

Why not just a long spring? We used to use them on the barn doors back on the farm. Just enough pull to close the door after you open it.

I am a novice, yet being passionate about welding I would like to suggest top quality closing struts. They can close gates up to 300KG.
