I was looking at something similar at one of the local hardware stores, but made out of cold rolled carbon steel. I asked my metal supplier of they can get cold rolled, he really didn't what what I was talking about. But it seems you can get cold rolled plates online fairly easily, it's just almost as cheap to buy the one from the hardware store. I have never descaled a steel plate with a torch, but I might have to look into it.

I really enjoy cooking over my fire pit, guess it's some sort of therapy for me. Like I had mentioned, I have that old disc plow that I made into a sort of wok and it's great. But sometimes is like to have a flat surface. I need to just go ahead and put that on my to-do list and get it done.
This certainly won't be for commercial use, so you think 3/4" will be necessary? I'm looking to make my griddle about 36 X 18 and a smaller one about 18 X 12. The ones at the store look like 1/4" plate and they have a criss-cross vertical supports welded on the bottom side.
I was leaning more towards the 1/4" plate of similar design as the ones I've see , with about 1 1/2" lip around three side and a handles. But I tend to over engineer things like the rest of you maniacs do.
