angled sledge hammer head

I left my sledge hammer at a friends house and needed it to work on a scraper so I decided to put a handle on an old head that has been laying around for at least 30 years. The new handle fit perfectly but the head is tilted 5 degrees. First I thought I needed to shave some wood from the handle but noticed the hole in the hammer head was actually at an angle. I wish I could post a picture. It is a double sided 8 lb sledge. One face has a slightly better strike angle swinging down on a low object but the other face is kind of useless.
Has anyone heard of anything like this? I searched the internet and came up with nothing. The angle is so noticeable I don't see how it could have gotten sold if it wasn't meant to be, but I have never heard of any such thing.

My own bad example, old petrified junk in the hole made the handle seat wrong.... Sandblast a little and then hit with a torch enough to know absolutely sure the head is ready. <br />

That or it is for persuade'n fence posts or other things in difficult situations?<br />

I regret that I have yet to break a sledgehammer THAT way......Loan it to me and maybe it will come back broken straight?

look at rail road spike sledge, when you're hammering the whole day at these things on the ground, the angle is welcome

I did make certain the hole was absolutely clean. when you look at it, it is obviously at an angle. never saw anything like it before.

I told you, it's a left handed sledge hammer. Don't you remember in school the two or three kids that needed special scissors because they're left handed? You should see a left handed coffee cup, it's really freaky.

Kind of like that sledge, all my adjustable crescent wrenches are: metric left handed, the right handed ones are all standard. It's really annoying not having the right one available.

I really appreciate the humor, but I would love to know if I have something unique or just a screwup. As for the metric adjustable crescent wrench, I have actually seen one for sale. Laughed my but off. Apparently the widest opening is a metric equivalent.

Being that all you've gotten was the most accurate and technical responses available on the interweb, my guess is nobody here has the slightest clue as to why your hammer head is angled. But there's probably some sort of medication that might help. <br />

The one comment that sounds right is snowbird's about being used on the railroad. He's probably right too.

Easy enough for the foundry to have a core slip and not catch it. Of if it's a Chinese foundry, to test their luck by seeing if they can sell it anyway and not get a come-back.

I have been attempting to do some blacksmithing. Recently a friend and I forged a hole in the head of a hammer I am attempting to forge. Off to the left angled slightly to the right, or is it reverse of that? Anyway, if the head was hand forged, that may account for the angle.......Just sayin...

If it works good down low then the other end would work good up high.
