  • Lincoln Aspect 375 TIG Welder Run on a Phase Perfect Converter

In 2010 I purchased a 15" Clausing Colchester Lathe and a Do-All vertical band saw, which both have three phase motors. In my garage I just have single phase power. I could have just installed a vector drive on each of these just like I did on my Bridgeport. Instead I decided to investigate if it was possible to use either a rotary or a digital three phase convertor for these two new machines for the present, with the idea of using the three phase convertor in the future to power a Dynasty 350 welder. The reason for doing this is that the Dynasty 350 has a much better duty cycle on three phase compared to single phase. After a discussion on this forum I decided to purchase and install a Phase Perfect PT-330 digital phase converter. I have powered my lathe and saw on the Phase Perfect for the past five years without any problems

My friend who is an account manager at a local welding supply company just dropped off a brand new Lincoln Aspect 375 TIG welder for me to try out. The Lincoln Aspect 375 also has a reduced duty cycle on single phase similar to the Dynasty 350. I didn't want to smoke the Lincoln 320 amp water cooled torch that came with it so I limited my welding to 320 amps. I didn't have any problems welding aluminum at 320 amps with the Aspect 375 running on my Phase Perfect digital three phase generator.

    Attached are three pictures.

The first picture shows my power setup in my garage. The panel on the left is my single phase distribution panel. The next panel to the right is the three phase distribution panel. In it I currently have one circuit breaker for the Lathe, one for the Do-All saw and the third for the three phase welder. The next panel is a relay box to start the phase perfect digital phase converter. The last three boxes to the right are the disconnect for the lathe, Do-All saw and three phase welder. The big box on the top is the Phase Perfect. The green stickers on the panels indicate that everything was inspected and approved by my local electrical inspector.

The second picture is the Lincoln Aspect 375 welder, which is hooked up to my three phase power.

The third picture is a piece of 1-1/2" round stock welded to a piece of 1-1/2" square stock to try it out.

    Aspect 375 TIG Welder..??

    Built where..??

is this another Italian built or other offshore made machine.. imported and rebadged as a RED one...??

the Italian Invertec machines have been a disaster...

    Just curious...

The tag on the welder says that it was assembled in Cleveland OH with parts made in the USA and imported.
The tag on the cooler says that it was made in Poland.

        Thanks Don...

did a little research on it and from what I am seeing... it is only capable of 375 AMPS if it is on 3Phase.....

and only 250 AMPS @ 30% Duty Cycle single Phase...

Not even in the same room with a Dynasty 350....

See Specs...page #8 of the manual..

Actually the duty cycle is exactly the same for both machines on both single and three phase as shown below.
It seems that the Lincoln Aspect 375 copied the Miller Dynasty 350 output ratings exactly.
The only difference is that Lincoln calls it a 375 amp machine and Miller calls it a 350 amp machine.

Reading the manual and reading the chatter on WeldingWeb

it sure sounds like they have limited the output to MAX of 250 amps with single phase input

Thank you, I should have searched better, lol. Would be nice to have that unit. Bit out of my price range though, not to mention I don't even have a 3-phase welder, haha. I keep reading about how the arc is much much smoother on 3-phase than on 1-phase.

I had some time over the Xmas break, so I decided to email Ivan Gracic who is the Product Manager -- TIG Process Solutions at the Lincoln Electric Company regarding the maximum output of the Aspect 375 on single phase. Here is a copy of my email:

                      Ivan,

On my welding forum the members are interpreting the specification for Aspect 375 to say that it is unable to weld above 250 amps on single phase, while the Dynasty 350 has a 10% duty cycle at 350 amps on single phase.

                      •Is this interpretation correct?

Below is a link to the the entire thread.

                      Don
                      Here is Ivan's answer:

It is correct, in that the maximum permissible welding output that we provide through the Aspect 375 when on operating on single phase is 250 amps.
Our design team purposefully instituted this limit (from a design/long term reliability perspective), with respect to the input current associated with low voltage, single phase power (which has a higher peak).
Feel free to call me if you would ever like to discuss.
Your interpretation of the specification was correct.

Maybe.... they should have named it the ASPECT 250/375 to be more honest...??

Being a 250 amp machine on single phase.... it goes against the Dynasty 280 not the Dynasty 350 for a large number of users....
