  • High School courses needed for Welding

Well as you all know I am goign to Holland College for welding they say you need Math, Physics, English & all 11 or 12 but what if you will only have a grade 11 math, I find math very difficult, I can measure do fractions of all sorts but physics I have tried and completly messed myself over with, But I have Metal working fundamentals a.k.a welding which my mark is 81% will not understanding physics really make welding an unreachable goal, mind you the teacher from HC told me he will get me accepted. Will not understand physics hold me back any form the course? What exactly do you need english for? I have never really understood why you could possibly need it for a trades course other then the fact you need to write stuff out for people and beable to talk properly?

Why not go to a welding trade school like Tulsa...I'm sure there is a good one close enuff and they don't mess with all that stuff...just welding. But if you don't cut it they flunk you!!

Anyone can burn rods, with a little dexterity. But to actually 'build' something ... takes math. After all, how useful is a trailer if you've no idea of it's capacity? Or a plow blade if you didn't take into account it's load? Pre and post heat times? Even when they don't take the time to write up the sums, most welders have still done the math in their heads.

I completely understand what your saying about anyone can burn a rod with little or no effort. I knwo it takes math to measure, properly calculate thickness and heat but i just wanted to know why does academic have to be so importent? I am in it and passing it but I never understood the importence behind it thats all. I know you leanr Trig and other things in it which is also very importent for determining angels etc. But whats the importence in physics honistly I tryed it and failed at it and never really seent he importence besides a 2 day lession on grounding which anyone can really learn and not ahv e to take physics?? explain please
Thanks for reading I hope my post helped

You need to learn to spell to communicate with others...Your posts are hard to understand what you're saying.

Just because you can't see a need for an education now doesn't mean you don't need it.
A lack of a full education will hold you back more than you'll ever realize.
Stay in school get a well rounded education & you'll never regret it.

Because it's a College, and a fixed College Program. Not a welding class, but a program. Programs are usually looked over by the gov't or a regulating body if there's any sort of degree or certification involved. When I was younger and was starting a college computer degree, I had to take humanities, english, and gym classes too. None of which have ever served me in repairing computers these last couple of decades. But if you wanted the degree, that was the gov't imposed requirements. I said bugger it and took the adult night program and did it in one year instead of three, but came away without the gov't signed degree.

Am I any less good at what I do for it? Nope. But without that gov't signed paper, I've one less bullet on my resume. And if the person hiring isn't a computer person, that's all they'll see.

              To be a Welder/Fitter

Dont sweat it to burn rod or wire is just to easy If you already know how to do that see told ya,.
Now knowing what the **** is going on while your welding is what your going to school for eh.
when you look at job and say to your self how am I going to weld that

#1 (will I tig it? hmmmm not a bad choice; But the project is just a little to big for tig)

#2 Well I could use rod? maybe 7018 1/8" but I have so many of these things to do and rod might look better but it will take longer.

#3 So then I will use mig it's faster, I can get these things done in no time flat,
and im a pretty good mig welder I can make these things look good.

now after all that there are other choices to make and consider
size of wire and type;Type of steel type of gas, type of process, welding position, what grainular stage will I be in while welding.

The short version if what you said is true about your math abillity
If you know triangulation ,Volume, area,Decimals, and fractions some what well
YOU WIIL DO FINE..... (Physics I dont recall any of this) You would'nt beleave me if I told you what grade I have.Hydraulics has physics calculations

the trades You will not find physics in
              cooking,welding, fabrication, autobody,auto painting,machining,millwrighting,
(electrical Im not to sure about this one or plumbing), drywalling, gas machincs,
and heavy duty hey there's something you should think about get your C ticket in welding then become a heavy duty mechanic very good jobs with those two trades behind you; You could write your own pay cheque.
anyway I hope that I have helped a little anyway
Note: Keep in mind you will be going back to school for the next 4 years
to get what you want IT IS WORTH IT YOU'LL SEE.( By the way what does your mom and dad say about your education?)

I guess if your goal is to sit in a booth and pull a trigger all day you don’t need much math, English, ect.... But I will tell you one thing for sure, if you plan to be a good fabricator or better yet run a business you will need all that along with street smarts and decent manners. Not a single day goes by that I don’t use all of that. I need to do good math for the books and be able to calculate rough estimates in my head while I deal with a customer. Run a mill or a lathe for a few weeks and see how much math you use. Dealing with the general public you need to come across as intelligent and trust worthy, slang or sloppy English won’t impress too many customers. I can only speak for my self, but I know that I would love to put my life in rewind and take the time to learn more and educate my self better while I was younger and had more time to do it.I would probably spend more time with the cheerleaders too, but thats a different subject.

Thank you for your input. I am planning on doing A LOT more then just sitting in a booth all day. I would someday hopefully start m y own busness. In HC we have a welding course that leads to fab. I am going back for the extra year to get that so I'll be leaving with two tickets.

                        example(i think)

lets say you have a 70 foot vessle with 1 3/4 inch walls, 5 foot diameter, 3 manways of different sizes, various nozzels and baffels. the prints are in front of you with all of the info you need. you have 2 10 ton cranes. how do you rig and move the thing properly and safely without the proper math knowlege?

as for english, if you open a shop, how do you talk to investers and customers intellegently to land the big bucks?

i'm just a dumb hick but, i don't want anyone to know that untill i get their buisiness.
hope that clears a little up for you
