Econo Tig or Dynastry 200

I’m relatively new to the welding scene and am currently enrolled in a welding class at the local technical college. I’m doing this just for fun and hobby. The class is 3 months long and you get to use all the equipment they have.

I really like TIG welding and my instructor likes the work that I do. Here is my dilemma: I’m looking at buying a TIG welding and have kind of narrowed it down to the Miller Econo TIG or the Dynasty 200. I would greatly appreciate it someone could share with me the pro’s and con’s of each machine. Thanks.

If you're choosing between those 2, DEFIANTLY!!!!! the Dynasty MUCH better machine....Many more features.

The syncrowave 200 is far better than the econotig if you're looking for a smaller packaged machine. I owned a tigmate (hobart colored econotig) for 9 months to teach myself tig on, and looking back I would've been better off getting another unit. The price was right on my machine though.

at my school we have an Econotig, its a nice machine to learn on, but I'd go with something with more amperage and features since your purchasing a machine

I've got a econotig, and its a good machine,,,,,, but.....

I've often times wished it had a little more output, especially all those times it shut itself down on it's overheat/thermal cut out switch when I was doing big projects.

if you have the $$ the dyn200 is the way to go . its the best lil TIG in its class and well abouve the econo TIG. the econo TIG in many cases gets sold as soon as the lerning curve is over as its low output and people out grow it quickly. if you have the power to feed it and the space the syncro200 would also be a great choice.

I bought a Syncrowave 200 a while ago, the salesman never even mentioned a dynasty, but all seem to love it here.

What are the working differences between the sync & dynasty ?

A dynasty would have fit under the counter much better !

I was going to buy the Sync 200 at the last tent sale, but they ran out! I got a Dynasty 200 instead when I found out it was a better machine, 'specially to TIG aluminum! Balance has a much wider range than the Sync, and I've heard too many stories on how the econotig just doesn't do enough for them.

the Dyn is an inverter so it has more arc controle, frequency ajustability much better pulse options and willl run on a 30 amp circuit as well as its capable of running off 110V power. take a look at the spec's on the Miller dyn page to get a better idea. its more controle, nothing wrong with the syncro200, its a great option i would love one. just cant feed it. had to go inverter
i'm realy happy with my TA-185, its getting the job done just fine, some day i'll get a dyn200DX if i come into some $$.

Which One?

Man, get the best one you can afford! I am in the same dilemma over a 200DX or a 350DX. I think I will go ahead and scrape together the coin to get the 350DX and the complete TIG Runner and Torch package.

I don't think my little shoppe will ever outgrow the 350DX but some heavy trailer frame and chassis fabrication might be a little much for the 200DX. Plus you get much more control over your processes with the higher end machines.

I don't think you can go wrong with either machine and as a bonus, they will both run off of a 220/50A circuit.

I was saving for the contractor's kit for my Dyn200. Just ran into the salesman at Costco, he said that contr. kit is air cooled and rated for 150amps. yeesh...With the alum I want to weld, I need 160-175 amps, so its off to a water cooled torch and water cooler for me!!! Oh, btw, I fixed my truck just now! Thought I would have a $500 to a $1,000 fix, but looking at the engine (which I know nothing about), I found 2 small hoses that were brittle and cracked. Replacing it? $2.00 Saving $500??? = priceless....

150amp TIG torch is the right one for the Dyn200

he said that contr. kit is air cooled and rated for 150amps. yeesh...With the alum I want to weld, I need 160-175 amps, so its off to a water cooled torch and water cooler for me!!!
TIG torches are rated at 100% duty cycle, the Dyn 200 is like 40 or 60% duty cycle at 150amps. so the 150amp torch is rated for more amps than your Dyn200 can give it.
water cooled is nice but not likely needed for home use. the air cooled torch will get the job done, if its gets too hot for your liking's then you can go to watter lots do but its just to be more comfortable. you can piece together a contractors kit for about $200 less than they sell for if you have the time and are willing to use the e-pay system. i put together a kit with flow meeter instead of flow gage for right around $270. nothing against the con. kit if you don't have the time or know what to look for its a good way to go. you can always add water cooled later and keep the air cooled torch for mobil work or the fast fix if you want, only the torch will be different all the rest of the stuff in the con. kit will still be used with water cooled system, so its not a big loss to get the air cooled stuff to try it out before going water cooled. it will give you a chance to decide for your self if you really feel the need for water cooled.

James, actually,thanks for the info. But..if I buy a air-cooled torch now, there is no way in heck, wife is going to let me buy ANOTHER torch later. Might as well by the good one now Weldcraft was coming out with a new water-torch in June, so I should see it at this upcoming tent sale.
