First, what kind of welding experience/machine do you have or have access to?
Second, there's a lot of preliminary decisions to be made. Is it going to be chain driven, screw driven, or some other style of drive mechanism? Is it going to ride on rollers, a rail system, or something else? Will there be a top roller support of some kind to aide in vertical stability while it operates?. What is the evironment surrounding the gate area? Bad slopes or other difficult terrain to have to compensate for in the design? Will it be remote controled, key pad controled, proximity sensors for auto opening? Is this gate mainly for ornamental use, or does it need to be geared more for security? That's the ones that come to mind at first thought. SSS
SSS is correct. There are lots of factors to consider if you're building a gate. I had a 38' slide gate built. I had to get a commercial gate motor (Elite made by Chamberlain). It has 2 1/2 HP motors running in parallel.
I would not want to try to build my own even if I had the time to do it. No doubt that it would not have looked or worked as well as a professionally built unit.
Hey, SSS,
I think you may have scared him away!!!
George, are there a lot of gates to look at where you live? Be easier to see what you want, then you can answer SSS's questions. If you like or if it would be helpful, I could take some pics next week to give you an idea of what he's talking about...
