  • Pin for rear hatch of trailer.

The rear hatch of my customers trailer had slip hinges.
When My customer went over a bump the rear hatches slipped up and fell off.
The hatches landed on the pin and broke off the cross member.
My customer found the pin but he never found the cross member so I made a new one and welded it on.

When I welded the cross member to the pin I had difficulty filling the groove weld without undercutting. I found if I allowed it to cool between passes it worked better. When I got done with a pass the temperature was about 650°F. I was impatient because it took forever for it to cool. You can still see a little undercut on the left side of the weld in the first picture.

I asked my customer to take a picture of the pin installed in the hatch. I would have preferred a picture taken from an angle so that you could get oriented. The second and third picture show a top view of the pin in place on top of the hatches at the rear of the trailer. Don't ask me why the cotter pin is 7 inches from the pipe it goes through. As it is the pin would slide back an forth across the top of the hatch and rub the paint off.

The trailer gets light use. My customer uses it to haul around his ATV. For the pictures in the previous post, the trailer is backed into the garage. The hatch opens away from you. The stuff that you see in the background is actually sitting on the garage floor in the back of the garage.

I'd call it a clevis pin on the tail gate, or gate latch.
