powder coated counter top

I am doing a kitchen remodel and installing new cabinets. I have built the cabinets myself and have really enjoyed it. My wife I are tossing around ideas for counter tops and have stumbled upon some interesting ideas, specifically powder coated steel. If any of you have had any experience with this I would greatly appreciate any info that could help me. It seems that 1/16" is the typical thickness. Does this sound right. My welder is a millermatic 210. I have never welded much of material this thin and am concerned with warping. Any suggestions for technique. I would love to have any ideas or suggestions on this subject.

I personally would not go with a metal counter top. But aside from that idea, I built a whole new kitchen for us last year, used cherry and put in dark Granite counter tops.
Now the reason for writing, I put stainless steel as the back splash all around the walls. We spent seven grand on a pro gas range and hood. I cut the outlets out with plasma cutter and got stainless cover plates. It looks superb and adds reflected light.
It only cost me $75 for the stainless and even did the large section above the stove. There is a sheet metal shop that cut the sections to size for me. Wolf the stove company wanted $425 just for the piece above the stove. It was the cheapest part of the whole job. Every one who comes in the house says WOW when they see it.
Anyhow think about it.........

Don't do it, you will HATE it. Powder coating will scuff easily. After a month or two of light use the counters will have scuffs all over them and there is no polishing it out or buffing it. It will also wick up water near the sink and start to peel there first, probably within 6 months you will have some sort of peeling issue.

I know it's a welding forum, but I'm on the edge of redoing my kitchen too, pretty certain I'm gonna go with cast in place concrete counter tops. They looks pretty awesome and I like the industrial look, plus I bet it'll be a fun job. Add some stainless here and there like jmpgino did and roll on to the next project. Let's us know what you decide on.

Just an FYI, casting your own counter tops is not a fun job. You may want to try a section first out in the garage just to see what is turns out like.

I haven't been exactly thrilled about the taste of stuff I've eaten off my garage floor. It's either a bit greasy or gritty depending on where I pick it up.
