  • drum switch wiring

I'm racking my brain and burning the midnight oil here. I'm attempting to wire up a ventilation fan in my small fab shop out back and I want it to be reversible. So went to Grainger, got a new motor and a drum switch, wired exactly like the schematic. The thing works, changes direction of rotation and everything. Then about ten seconds into running, the motor starts to smoke. That's not good. I have swapped wires every which way I can think of, tripped the breaker a time or three and still the same. If I wire the motor direct it works fine, just not reversible. I've read just about every single forum I can find about it. Some guys get given a hard time since, apparently, this subject had been beat to death. Well in still struggling and would love some advice. Thanks!
