  • 4-wire extension

I have a 50-amp 14-50r in my house that I am going to run my electric beer brewery off. I bought 55' of 6/4 soow for that application. I figured that I will use that to run my mm251 off as well. Well that got me thinking that I should add a gfci protected 115vac duplex receptacle as well at the end of the cord.

What kind of box do I need? Can I fit it all with a cover in a 3-gang box?

2 disclaimers: this is a rental and I can't add circuits. I would just pull a circuit if I could. I have 200-amps of service to the house.

Second, this is purely for home hobby use and jot in an OSHA inspected area. All wiring is temporary and I am aware of the risks.

I would urge that since it is a non OSHA inspected area, you get a dog water bowl, fill it with gasoline, and place it under the welding table. Where OSHA doesn't inspect, there is no need for safety.

That sounds good. Stainless or plastic? Actually, since it is gas I'll go stainless.

One last question for you Willie. How does that help me weld or brew?

The creativity of people trying to kill themselves amazes me! I used to think farmers were the worst wheel re inventors in the world. I now know at home welders rival that urge to be creative. Electrical conduit is about the same cost as black plastic ABS water line, you can't buy fittings to use black plastic as electrical conduit. Therefore, 999 out of 1000 farmers will choose to use water line. They are willing to pay extra to have the job #$%^ed up!

So you want to have an extension cord that supplies both 230v and 115v simultaneously? From one 230v source?

Yes. There are two hots, a neutral and and a ground conductor. All 6 gauge.

How am I trying to kill myself? I want to run a 6 gauge 4-wire, including ground, 240vac feed into a box and then have a 240vac circuit for the welder or brewhouse control panel and a 20-amp 115vac convenience outlet. Isn't that what the main panel on my house is doing? I guess technically the power company is not supplying a ground.

You have been less than helpful. Enough rambling about gasoline and abs pipe. That is completely off the topic. You have not backed up anything you allege with facts or documentation. How am I unsafe? Would you like to hear about the JATO rocket I strapped to my pickup? I am not an idiot. I try to research things whenever I can. Asking people who have more experience than me is a step in researching. Allegedly you have experience, but apparently you are too wound up to share anything useful. Unless something changes your posts will go into auto-ignore mode.

Since this is temporary, I would buy a sub-panel and feed it via a 4 wire plug to your 6/4. Mount it on something removable and install the proper 230v and 120v breakers and outlets. GFCI outlet is , if not required, at minimum a good idea in the possibly damp conditions at your brewery. I don't know if this is code approved but as a temporary installation , I would think should be safe or someone tell me why it isn't.---Meltedmetal

                      MM-

That sounds reasonable. Another poster put a link to something like that. The brewery has it's own 50-amp gfci panel on the power input to the control panel. I would definitely put a 20-amp gfci convenience outlet in though. Just a cheap upgrade to make it a bit safer.

I didn't realize that I was trying to gnaw on an ungrounded 115volt hot wire when I asked this question... electricians do stuff like this all the time to stuff two 20-amp circuits into a single 2-gang box in your house.

                        ELVIS-

No problemo. But I think you have a 14-50r

                        15-50 is a 3-phase receptacle

50amp RV rigs are fed this way every day all across the country at thousands of RV parks.

The 50amp power cord has 14-50 connectors on each end.

If you can find the parts cheap enough you could certainly make a Distribution box that has a 14-50r and a 5-15 Duplex receptacle in it.

                          The "problem" is cost.

way cheaper to just run out a 120v ac extension cord from an existing receptacle for your 120v tools.

I did it with a Spider Box while camping. My Trailer has the 14-50 connections and I ran the cord to a Spider Box from the receptacle that is powered by the on board generator.
