Camping Fire Box

I had a client request I make him a strong and durable fire box for camping: the design parameters were wide open. He has 5 family members (3 daughters) so I made a 5 sided pentagon shape and hand cut designs appropriate for each family member.

[I'll hold this to the 4 image limit. The feet and upper lip are both made of #3 rebar. The box is 1/8" mild steel and he wanted it left unfinished.

Looks really nice. I would like to see what you did for "art".

Try talking the guy into high temperature paint. I don't think it will look as nice covered in rust, but the customer knows best I guess.

I suggest you put some angle iron on the bottom on the inside to stiffen the floor and help keep the wood up for air flow. Maybe even make a rebar wood rack. Also I would put a pipe nipple on the bottom with a cap that can be screwed off by hand to drain water after a rain.

The two biggest issues in my experience with fire pits like that are hard starting because of lack of air until a hot fire is drawing air in and dealing with the ashy soup after a rain.

There are air vents in the bottom, both to provide combustion air and get rid of the ashes.

I would at least paint the inside with high temp paint.
