I like to point the rod about 30deg up and work it side to side trying to "hold up" the puddle and give it time to burn in going slow as possible to not let the puddle drop. Works best for me!

In my experience with welding V-down with 6013 you need to run it hot and fast. Angle the rod right up, push it into the joint and do your best to stay ahead of the puddle and slag. It can be difficult sometimes to get the root to fuse on accound of the fast travel speed and slag getting into the weld puddle.

No matter what you do, you will not have any luck unless you material is relatively clean and dry. A little it of preheat may help, but is not nececesary.

i forgot to mention, the pieces i'm welding are a little wet... snowy, and the welds are a little porus. i figure thats because of the water coming up through the weld. my boss needed the garage frames up today so i was wondering if it might be because of the weather or what. 10 degrees and snow.

on a vertical down what is the proper angle of the stick? i'm using a 6013 and i can't keep it fron looking too lumpy. i'm trying not to move too much, just a little side to side but i think i'm holding it pointed up too much.
