I get it now. I saw the handle for the shield under the hole in the bottom and thought you had the ash catcher mounted. That makes sense to me now. Hard to see and think clearly early
I like that design. I have a compressor tank end that I have earmarked for a pit, and had been trying to figure a way to keep ash and embers off the patio while it is burning. I think I may have to borrow your idea.

aprox. 3"x16" round tin ash pan just slides underneath, doesn't need to be mounted imo.

removable burn plate allows sweeping of ash into pan underneath (not shown)
adjustable venting heat control w/home depot chipping hammer handle
works great, I just wish I'd made the burn guard wider to rest my boots without melting the soles.
