  • aluminized mufflers

Most replacement mufflers for older vehicles are aluminized steel. What is the advantage of aluminized steel over galvanized steel? Does it hold up to heat better?

It must have something to do with the heat. Where i used to work we made giant ovens and the skins were aluminized....Bob

gl trying to find a galvanized muffler, they are all aluminized, its much the same idea as galvanizing, resists corrosion, and last a very long time

My aluminized Flowmasters have been through 12 Michigan winters and have only a small amount of rust on them. The rest of the exhaust system has rotted out several times!

That has more to do with the thickness of the material than the coating on it. You'll never find exhaust tube as thick as Flowmaster makes their mufflers. Chances are "the rest" of your exhaust system was aluminized too.

actually i would say the base material has a greater impact on corrosion resistance than either the coating or any small variation in thickness. i've seen some pretty *thick* steel tubing turn to mush because the base material was terrible.

              True, they are quite heavy.

The stainless Flowmasters aren't much more $$

Both the 304- and 409 Stainless Steel "Hushmaster" mufflers have been discontinued. All Flowmaster mufflers are manufactured from aluminized 16ga steel WITH THE EXCEPTION OF the new Super 44 Off-Road series, which are made from 14ga diamond plate (steel) and then aluminized. All muffler tubing is aluminized (unless ordered from a specialty shop or custom fabricated) and is usually either 18ga or 16ga.
