  • Pipe corral & fence

I'm building a pipe corral and fence with horse wire attached. I am a fair welder with some (little) expierence in vertical and overhead welding and I am getting better with my torch and grinder at fitting. I use a Bobcat 250 and was interested in rod reccomendations as well as a starting place in setting my (new) machine. The pipe I'm using is 2.375" OD structural (reject new drill pipe) that is mildly rusty and is about .240 wall. Any advice from pros or serious amatures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Rods, etc.

    Welcome to the board!!!

Your best bet for welding your drillstem fence would be 1/8" 6010 5p+ or 6011. The 6010 is better and the 6011 is more readlily available. Run either one at around 75A (reverse polarity) or 85A (straight polarity). These rods produce excellent penetration and will work fine on the rusty pipe.

Good luck and pictures are always welcome here.

If you are close by I'd give you a bunch of 6010 to do it with, post you location in user CP, and being the nice guy I am would teach you how to weld pipe corral with it (on my own unfinished corral of course).

straight 6010 will work best. I have built literally miles of pipe fence. If it has little rust on it 6010 will work better than 5p+. I prefer uphill but that generally is only if you have the experience to do so.
On a side note 5p+ will be easier to clean up of ou are going to paint the fence. Don't forget your ospho to prime.

Not sure what you meant to type, but 6010 IS 5P+. I've got boxes of it in my consumables cabinet.

nah, old school 6010 (5p) were red coated with asbestos in the flux. 5p+ is the new and improved version

cutting horse just my 2 cents. i built a catch pen for cattle several years ago. the only thing that i would do different would to take out the 90 degree corners . the cattle would bunch up making the cattle harder to work. round them out or just make corners with 2 45 degre angles. wont take much just take out 90 degre corner.

Fast Freeze, Out-of-Position Pipe Welding, Mild Steel and Low Alloy Steel Stick Electrodes

Fleetweld 5P E6010 DC+ Fleetweld 5P is a great choice for welding on dirty, rusty, greasy or painted steel -- especially in vertical or overhead applications.

Fleetweld 5P+ E6010 DC+ Lincoln’s Fleetweld 5P+ is ideal for steel that’s less than 100% clean. It’s a first choice for pipe welding, and vertical-up and overhead plate welding. This electrode is a long-time favorite among operators who handle cross-country and in-plant pipe welding.

Like I said.....6010 IS 5P+. Have a look for yourself. Scroll down the page. I don't much care what colour the coating is (up here it's gray) 6010 is 6010, and 5P or 5P+ IS 6010. I have read where pipeliner's have their preference of the two, but for this application, I think the "best" rod is unneccessary.

As best I recall 5P and 5P+ are Lincolns recipes for 6010. I looked into it a little bit and they all meet guidlines for being 6010 but the amounts of alloying metals in them differ to give better characteristics for pipeline welding. So, all 5p and 5P+ is 6010 but not all 6010 is 5p or 5p+. For pipe corral I think any ol' 6010 that you have would work just great.

I have built a corral and alley way into the chute for cattle. I would suggest 6010 or 7018. I've used both on mine. It isn't a critical weld like a pipeline. You don't need 100% penetration just 1 good pass. I like 7018 over 6010 just because it looks cleaner. If it's a sound weld it doesn't matter, the cows or horses will never break it.

                      5P vs 5P+

Welding gas pipelines, we use ALOT of 6010. The only difference between the 5P and 5P+ is the flux coating. The newer 5P+ just seems to flow a little nicer and makes for an easier stringer bead. As far as using it for a fence, I don't think you would even notice the difference. JMHO.
