new to this post. lots of good info. been welding for many years mainly on the farm. for those just beginning or learning sign up at your local vo-tech school you will be ahead. i did after about 7years of teaching myself the wrong way. my question is about a new 225 bobcat. when using power plant only, does the engine rev to full throttle or should rpms stay low depending on load. i had a bluestar that you had to throw switches to weld and then throw them back for power. this machine would only rev up a little from idle when power plant was used. any feed back wquld be appeciated

The units typically work in one of two settings. Either in run or run/idle. When in run the unit will stay at high idle all the time. On run/idle, it will run at low idle when there is no load and high idle when any load is applied. It doesn't vary between the two. A 100watt light bulb or a 5kw floodlight, either way it will be at high idle until you turn them off. Which setting you use depends on the application you are in. If you are using it to run a few power tools on a job, then run/idle would work because you can tap your tool's switch and it will sense the load and idle up then you can go to work. After you turn the tool off, then in about five or ten seconds it will drop back to low idle. If you are running motor loads such as a compressor or pumps that switch automatically, then you would want to leave it on run so that it will handle the start up loads.

thanks sss .my bobcat operates as you mentioned. i was hoping that it would idle at lower rpms with a small load. lower rpms equals less noise. thanks again.

I put a honda civic muffler on mine, seems much quieter, and it didnt effect performance.

when i bought this machine i was hoping that it would generate power at low rpms like the miller bluestar. it would run small tools at low rpms and was very quiet. how did you mount the honda civic muffler? mount with existing muffler or remove the one on the machine.

I bought a 90degree bend to slip on the existing muffler, and an adapter to upsize that pipe to the civic muffler from autozone. Total cost was $31 bucks. I did have to search through the back of the store though, until I found a "replacement" muffler to my liking, it was fairly straight through, and all you really hear now is like a turbine sound from the air/generator spinning.... About 1/2 the sound. Muffler size was 2" odand about 10 x 13 inches

Had it like this for about 4-5 months now, and it works perfect.

I do alot of confined space welding in alley's and next to concrete walls, I think my hearing would be gone had I not done something...

              bobcat 225

              new to message board
found a bobcat 225 for $1500. have not looked yet ...but
              can i run a maxstar 140 off of the bobcat without con-verters / di-verters / di-gesters and a box rolaids
primary use for the bobcat is construction generator, i have a 6.5 k honda and it is about worn out ...secondary is tig alum and ss as it applies to public swim pool ladders, rails etc

              Question
              thank you in advance

the closest thing to putting an exhaust on a bobcat was a 50 Ft. electrical conduit for exhaust gas in a movie theater i put up
