  • Hello to all

Whats up guys! I am brand new to these forums and figured I would join since I got my first welder for christmas, a millermatic 180 with autoset. I am new to welding and am sure I will be turning to you guys for help in the future. The miller forums seems like they are filled will knowledgable folks who enjoy helping, learning, and sharing knowledge. One reason I was interested in the miller forums is it seems like no matter what you weld with, no matter what your skill level, you are among people who want to help and supply positive feedback. I look forward to learning from, and talking to you guys.

I was thinking bout a welding cart, but thats what my grandma got me for christmas to go with the welder! However I do want to make a simple set of arms to hold the power cord, ground, and the gun. I am also thinking about a welding table but space is a premium at my house, and eventually when I work up the courage I would like to try a go kart. Gotta purchase or make a tube bender first though. I have looked at some tube bender plans and they dont look to terribly difficult to make. Anybody got any tips on making one or what to watch out for?

            BTW, nice cart fun4now

its the die's that are the expensive part. making the bender is a cake walk. lots of free plans and options for the bender but you still need to buy the die's.

Go to the miller homepage and look for the millermatic 140/180 with autoset. When you get to a page with one of the two welders there will be blue text sying "auto set" at the top. When you click it there is a short informational video on what autoset is.

Yeah im not to sure about the autoset feature. I have tried it a little bit but it seems like it wants to feed the wire a little to fast. Maybe it is just my technique, as I learned what little bit I know from my dads stick welder. I seem to get better results doing a little trial and error with the speed and the voltage settings manually. Im sure I will get better with time... cause I sure cant afford to get any worse!!!

I am wondering what " auto-set" is. I have seen this on this forum alot lately

Now with Auto-Setâ„¢! Automatically sets your welder to the proper settings! This All-In-One MIG is capable of welding up to 5/16 inch mild steel. Smooth-Startâ„¢ provides a smooth, spatter-free weld start

                    check out this link

its the next generation of WST. WST was a hit with some and a big miss with others. so miller has given the option to turn it on or off depending on your skill level or personal preferences. in short you just tell the welder you are about to weld 1/4" or 1/8" steel and it sets its self for the proper volts and wire speed.
i suspect like the WST from before , some will like it wile others may not. but Miller allows it to be on or off so every one should be happy now.
                    thanks for the help

Sounds like a gimick, learning what heat, wire speed does is part of the learning process.
I am old thinking, I guess.

i agree, you should have to learn some thing before you start welding stuff. scary how easy they are making welding. seeing some of the crap that ends up on the road now is bad enough already. maybe this will help hold some of it together ?? or could make it worse ??? hard to tell ???
