  • Cast iron/cast steel

Is there an easy way to determine if I have a piece of cast steel or if it is cast iron?

    Maybe spark testing...

If it will cut with a torch it is cast steel, cast iron will only melt

Usually cast iron has a rough finish to it such as a cast iron frying pan or weights in a gym, engine blocks, looking close enough, you can see or feel the pores from the sand casting.

Cast steel has a smooth finish to it like some cookware, motor housings, gears, sprockets, etc.

Cast Iron will make a thud type sound if you hit it with a hammer wheras cast steel will haver more of a ring sound to it.

Mig weld a piece of scrap steel to it.

If it holds - cast steel

If it falls off - cast iron

                LOL

Toe test! drop it on your toe, cast steel makes you say OOUUChh !,cast iron makes you [email protected]#%%#^%#

Seriously though, spark test. Dull orange sparks off a grinding wheel are iron, steel is yellow.
