  • New maxstar 200DX - LOTS OF QUESTIONS

HEy guys - I thought I would post to you guys since there are a ton of intellectual guys in here and I like the answers I always get from you all!

Just landed a maxstar 200DX , Really happy.
    So here comes the question.

On ebay there are smoking deals on the WP20-25 water cooled torches, one of which I am going to buy shortly here.........I am not familiar with the maxstar 200DX my self and don't have the machine my hands just yet. So if I buy a torch like this

What else is needed to attach it to the machine?
I am not new to MIG and such - but TIG is a completely new game to me, completely!

On the miller website I see options like this
    "ADAPTER, TORCH-INTNL STYLE WATER(#18, 20) 195377 "
Which I have no clue how or what it does or if I even need it.

SO BASICALLY if you guys are all with me here LOL.
I want to know what it will take to strap that torch I linked you all to above - To my new maxstar. And what the heck are all those extra accessories on the miller site - Do I need them or not and what they do or how the heck they function!

As for the remote control device.
I am going to buy my self a 14 pin amphenol connector, wire in a single SP switch to switch PIN A/B for on / off
THEN - fire a 1Kohm 2 watt resistor onto PINS C/D/E for my current control.

Does this click in any ones mind what I am doing - In terms of will this work or will this not work?
Should work and be a cheap mans alternative to 200$ on millers site, Although it will be a bit hard to retrofit a POT to a tig torch..........Still thinking on how I should go about doing that - Any ideas guys?!

So that about sums it up, What I need to run that torch and my remote control unit I plan to make!

Thanks every one for the input. And sorry for the confusing thread!
    Appreciate it
    Christian

you will need dins connectors for water cooled torches, and a cooler to connect to. do you have a water cooler now ??
SCS sells really nice foot controls for about $165 last time i checked. http://stores.ebay.com/SSC-Controls-Company they are excellent choices, well made if you decide to buy instead of build.
http://www.arc-zone.com/ caries all the connectors you need for the water cooler and will be happy to talk you threw what you need. good people to deal with.
if you do stick to building your own, do a search on it here and the motor-sports board. its been done before and it can tell you what you need.

    welcome to the site.
    thanks for the help
    ......or..........
    hope i helped

you dont really need a water cooler with only 200a dc, you would be fine with the standard 150a air cooled unit, then there is no need for the adapter and water cooler

as for the foot pedal i belive it is a 10k pot and a momentary switch, but for the 165$ the scs one is worth it, especially since you will be saving that by not having to buy a chiller

        welcome to the site.
THanks for the welcome and thanks for the info!
I am working on the cooler as we speak. its a pond pump ( 500 GPM ) fed into a 4L SS reservoir that will get pumped into a small tranny cooler 4"X6" that will have temp sensors and digital readout of temp and switches for on and off or what not........Might tie it into the system directly so when pre flow comes on it starts up and then shuts down after post flow.

Can you please explain what DINS are or how it works or how it looks or similar........Can it be made?!

I just dont understand what leads are desgined to go where from the torch to the machine.........Power Water Gas?

        THANKS!

Yea I thought I would not need one this powerful, but ebay doesnt have any CHEAP 150amp torches.......Infact its cheaper to go this route then air cooled.

I am thinking of a hand dialed control not a foot pedal - So the jury is still out on that right now!

Any other info - Dont be shy!

          THANKS

this page covers the various dins options for with and without water cooled as well as a few other older options. maybe not older but less high teck ?? not shore how to make that call.

anyhow that page should cover it. depending on the torch you get and what is all included in it ??? you may or may not need some or all of the above parts......... that doesn't sound like much help, but not knowing what you have i cant really say what you need.
keeping in mind you need water in, water out, power connection, and gas flow all to get to the torch. so look at what you have and get what you need.
i'll see if i can find a diagram showing al the connections. maybe one of the guys with a water setup will share a pic or 2 with ya. i have not gone water yet as I'm still goofing off at building the cooler.
              thanks for the help

HEY - thanks for the awesome reply!!
I see now what I need and what I don't, Roughly!
Those DINS connector are bloody expensive..........Here's one for you.

                How does this work http://store.cyberweld.com/tigtopoadsod1.html
I assume the off set nipple section goes into the welder side, Then the other end gets the screw end of the torch, Then I hook up the the water line to one of the water lines, and then it flows through the DIN into my torch then out the other end of the water line into the reservoir or what ever your setup is?

I wonder if some thing like that can be made.......Probably!
Also do I really need a water cooled torch, Can I get away with a 150A air cooled torch setup?
I mean could it or will it sustain 200A at long periods of time or just forget about it?!

Some picture would be nice of the setup - Or at least a diagram of all this in action..........THANKS guys!

Those Dinse connectors in your post are great. I've used them. A 150A air cooled will get hot fairly quickly at 200A, but you can always pause to let it cool down.

                    Thanks for the reply!

Although I still dont understand how the DINSE connector works or how the fluids flow in it

Might as well buy a water cooled one!

                    thanks

                        Sure
                        a 10L stainless S reservoir a tranny rad thats 4" X 6" a large 220V fan and a pond pump that flows 500 GPM.

Its all there and ready to rock.

All useless unless I know how the DINSE works

That'll work. The dinse connector is really cool. The torch connects to the dinse connector and the pigtail is where the water comes out to go back to the cooler.
