  • Bird nesting problem miller 140

Any ideas why my miiler 140 wire feed "bird nests" about every 4 minutes of welding? Hopefully it is an easy fix cuz my better half won't go for a new one

your wire could be sticking in the liner or the tip. try to loosen up the wire tension a little bit so if the wire hangs up the rollers will slip on the wire instead of trying to push it out where ever it can.

Which wire are you running on the unit fluxcore, solid, or aluminum?

Ok then, a commom problem with fluxcore is running to much drive roll pressure, which ends up crushing the hollow tube wire, causing it to hang up in the round bore of the contact tip.

If you run strictly fluxcore or quite a bit of it, I 'd invest in the knurled drive roll designed for fluxcore, because it allows you to run a much lower drive roll spring pressure.

                Mig gun condition/nozzle dip use??

                Hello Brownie!
What's the condition of the mig gun? Do you use nozzle dip?

I've seen those darn mig guns "gum up" from the use of nozzle dip. I know it sound silly, but over time the dip works it's way into the liner and can restrict smooth movement of the filler wire. Also, if there are any kinks/damage to the mig gun or liner (even slight) can cause problems with it feeding through.

Try pulling your welding wire out and use compressed air and blow the dust out of the gun by connecting it to the tip end. Oven the liner gets plugged up with the dust from the flux of flux core wire or just the dust that lands on the bare wire itself.
