  • Speaking of trash to treasures...

I see people throwing out old appliances all the time. So I was thinking of using some old washer, dryer, or stove shell to create a small bench top welding booth.

Would the appliance shell stand up to welding, flame cutting, and flying molten metal grindings? Any other foreseeable problems? Suggestions?

    Thanks.

You can make some nice booths with appliance covers and yes, they will hold up to the sparks and slag flying around.

Check out this link with a picture. It is from this board

        Wow! Great Idea

Those casings are quite tough for sheet metal. I see those things (washers and dryers) given away for free around here all the time (non working)! I wonder what other good ideas could be thrown around for those casings??? Cool idea, Jonnymag!

Thanks for the link. I thought I remembered seeing something about it, but I wasn't sure where I saw it or how well it worked out.

I live in an apartment/commercial area, so (a) I'm looking for a way to contain the flying debris and arc flashing, and (b) there's a lot of metal in the trash -- bed frames, metal furniture, files cabinets, metal shelving, washers, dryers, refrigerators, etc. About once a month, people pile their junk out on the sidewalks for bulky item trash pick up day. But there must be a lot of stainless steel scroungers around here because even an old stainless trough-style urinal disappeared before the trash pickup.

Be careful with refrigerators, freezers, etc. they have those tanks with freon that must be professionally disconnected & disposed of at a recycling site.

LOL. I gave up huffing aerosols back when I was still a kid. These days I usually stick to my "glaucoma medication"

When we get older we pay a guy with a medical degree to give us our high, something wrong with that picture.

Office threw out a small drawer file cabinet the other day, cutting wheel, here I come.

Also, if anybody gets the chance to get one, the big aluminum control boxes they use at Red Lights make wonderful storage cabinets for smaller tools. They actually have shelves inside and you can lock them. Check with your city, most times you can pick them up for a couple bucks.

My city is too cheap to let somethin like that go.. WOW, who is your city run by? I work for our city, we have people ask for things like road salt, we tell them, get a bucket and take some, blacktop, same thing. See a street sign on our scrap pile, take it. Oh I can believe what people throw away, I see it all the time and if I had a barn, you wouldnt be able to walk through it
