    Used Scuba tanks

I have 3 old out of date / vip steel scuba tanks that I was wondering what I could use them for. What type of project I could build. I know I could build a large bell, but does anyone have any other ideas?

Also, if anyone near me that would like one, I would let them have one (local pick-up only) for free.

      Air tank...

Change out the fittings and use as tank for on board air compressor tank on off road truck, buggy? Could have lots of air space to run a set of train horns that a lot of people are going nuts over. Cut them down and make butane burners for fish cookers. That's what I come up with off the top of my head.

        Thanks Bigiron,

I can see making a compressed air bottle, but I don't understand how to cut it down to make a butane burner?

Oxygen cylinders make pretty good bells if you cut the bottom off and put a hanger on the inlet. There is alot of steel in them that I think helps the ring. I have cut some fire extinguishers but they are pretty thin. Scuba tanks??

Pretty simple really. If they are steel, then cut a section out about six to eight inches long. Use round stock for legs. Either bend those to form a foot and come back up somewhere and weld to itself, or just use a piece of flat bar to make a foot. Come off the top, up and out at an angle about six to eight inches with three pieces of round stock spaced around the cylinder, and then bend a piece of round or square into a circle and weld to that. That's the platform the pot sits on over the burner. Use various parts purchased to repair a butane burner at the hardware store or some such to plumb in the butane line. Probably pick that stuff up in Home Depot by the butane bar b que pit section and or in the plumbing or heating section. Look up some burners on the internet to get a better picture of what I am trying to describe, or maybe someone can describe it better than me. The legs can be any where from twelve inches or longer. Your choice on length. You can use square tubing as well for legs. Once you see one at the hardware store or walmart or somewhere that carries them I'm sure you will see what I am talking about. Crawfish cooker will probably turn up similar results in a search engine on the net. Good luck.

              David,

This artist make lots of interesting sculptures including bells out of scuba tanks, fire extinguishers and other metal parts.

I've seen people cut designs and scenes into a large diameter metal pipe to make a fire ring. Another use was to make a tall desk lamp out of a fire extinguisher body. The artist used a plasma cutter to cut animal designs in the wall. Then he put a couple of small 12 volt halogen lamps inside and projected the designs on the corner of the room where the lamp was placed.

              good luck

there isn't much i could do with it but put a few fittings on it and make an air tank out of it. i dont have a set of torches or a plasma cutter to cut on it or anything. i may get it for an air tank though.
