How about a chain binder rig?
Adjustable, replaceable and strong.
Add a standoff where the doors meet so the chain won't be straight across with no strength, and would create in-pressure on them. I can see a heavy chain secured to one side, crossing the standoff (cam) and the binder attached between the end of that chain and a short piece on the opposite side. That would leave the binder to the side of the opening, away from the spill as it cracks the door. It would also give you a safety factor in that the doors would have limited travel when cracked open.
Is that worth 2 cents?

Can the gate have any sort of framework above it? If so, you might use a cam type system similar to the way rear doors are closed on those 18 wheeler enclosed trailers. You would be able to open it with weight against it, but the top framework might interfere with some of the stuff you haul.

Well thats were I'm at . sides, gate is about 24-32" tall, I may do the solid bar through the heavy plates, or round, as a "dead bolt style. That will hold but opening with wieght against it is my concern.

I think your question has sparked some interest, however, others must be like me and not really know how to latch (or I should say safely unlatch) a gate in the middle that will have the weight of a load of dirt against it.

I posted again so it would be on top of the stack, I really could use some ideas. Once I do this it needs to be useable. This trailer has paid for itself many fold, but ain' done yet.

dump trailer tailgate
I have a tandem axle dump that currently has a tail tailgate that can be used as a ramp or to spread with. This gate sucks! It is very heavy, falls off etc...
This trailer hauls everythig from dirt, concrete, pigs, skidsteer, asphault, firewood...
I am going to build a two piece gate that hinges on the sides. What I am having trouble with is the gate latch style, I have seen a few but don't think they will hold up.Any ideas
Thanks, Tim.Tags: None
