  • HTP200 or Ironman 210?

Does anyone have any experience with HTP welders? I know I've seen a picture of one in somebody's signature tag, but I can't remember who it was...?

I'm thinking of buying either an HTP200 with HTP3035 spool gun or a Hobart Ironman 210 with HTP spool gun (direct connects) or possibly a MM210 with HTP spool gun (direct connects) if the one I know about is still available for $1200. Total cost for the HTP/SG setup is $1400, total cost for the Ironman210/SG setup is $1500, and total cost for the MM210/SG setup is around $1600.

Anybody got suggestions or ideas on anyone who uses HTP's? I've heard good things about them in the past but nobody I know has one (that I know of...).

    Clint,

I have not used any HTP equipment so I don't have a basis for comparison.

I would suggest that you also consider the Hobart Handler 210 in your comparisons. It's a new unit but all the reports are good. Much more compact than the Ironman 210 and also comes spoolgun ready. Built similar to the HH187 but with more "*****". Think they can be had via the internet for around $850. If it welds like the 187, Hobart's got a winner.

This rig would also be more portable than the Ironman 210.

Just another thought to further "confuse" the issue.

      Where oh where?!

Are these super deals on welders on the net? I keep hearing of them and when I started t look at Sync 200's I have not found one that beats the price of my LWS.

I am still saving for that purchase so a point in hte right direction would be appreciated.

Sorry for jumping the thread but I had to ask.

      Thanks,

Have you ever noticed that enough is usually too much?!

I've had pretty good luck with Cyberweld on prices, free shipping and no tax. Bought a couple things from them. BWS29128, you might want to check their prices, just to compare.

          internet suppler.

i got all my welding equipment from IOC. great before and after service. he sends you a shipping tracking number to your e-mail (within 24 Hrs in all my cases). he was also there for me when i had a problem with my TA-185. and is usually within $10 of the best price on the net.he will continue to get all my business.
keep in mind some LWS are willing to flex a little bit if you show the internet $ , they can also throw in some goodies with the deal and its a great way to start a relationship with the LWS. so give them a shot and see what they can do for you. some are better than others.
          thanks for the help

No To HTP, Yes To Miller/Hobart

The only problem I have with the HH210 as opposed to the Ironman210 is that the spoolgun is proprietary. If, for example, I bought the HH as opposed to the Ironman, I couldn't take the spool gun and put it on a shop machine later like the MM350p, which I'd like to have some day down the road.

In addition to the Ironman 210, I'm also hunting around on the 'net for a MM210 and even looking at some of the prices on the new MM212's.

I spoke via email with Jeff Noland of HTP yesterday. I was all ready to buy his MTS180 multi-process machine, but he says his 3035 spool gun (they call it an RSG200) will fit but will not work without a step-up switch to raise the voltage of the machine. I also love HTP's Invertig201AC/DC, but I guess "now" isn't the time for me to get into HTP's product line (in terms of personal ownership).

Sorry for talking in circles...I'm not done with my first cup of coffee yet

SundownIII, I remember when everyone was just finding out about the existence of the HH210 (I mainly remember eating crow...) and in addition to the original NorthernTool, someone suggested a lower price on a different website....can you remember which website it was? I'm bound and determined to not go back "over there" to hunt down the thread....

I'd like to find that website though...

              Clint,

Think the site you're referring to is "Cyberweld.com". They've got the HH210 shown for $851 shipping included. I have bought from them and was very satisfied. They don't show the Hobart spoolgun (DP 3035-20) but I suspect they can get one.

I wouldn't be too concerned about compatability between a spool gun you may buy now for a 200-220A machine and whether it will work on a MM350P. Think you'll find that the 15A/30A are the recommended spoolguns for the 350. Not sure that even the Miller 3035 will work on the MM350. I know it's not "plug and play", but there may be an adapter available. The 30A allows you to adjust wirespeed at the gun whereas the 3035 doesn't (if I'm correct).

Just to further confuse the issue and I know it's more than you want to put out at this time, but there's a guy advertising a "new" Miller 350P over on Welding Web for $2,800. That's a heck of a price for that machine.

The only reason I brought up the HH210 was that it looks like the "least expensive" (notice I didn't say cheapest--none are cheap) way to get you up and running with a spoolgun for the type of work you do. Then it's up to you to get out and put it to work and "rake in" the bucks to justify the move to the MM350P. Plus the HH210 is small enough to throw in the back of the truck when you go out to the different marinas. I can say from experience, the MM251 is a great machine, but at 200+ lbs, it's not something you want to be loading in the truck every day.

Just another tip. If you go with something in the 200A range, pick yourself up a couple of 50' 30A (10Ga wire) shorepower cords and put your own ends on. (lot cheaper than buying the wire alone at one of the big box stores). That along with an adapter (to standard 50A 125/250V dockside plug) enables me to get to most anywhere in the yard or on the docks with the HH187. (I have several extension cords made up that were "thrown away" because the owners melted the molded plugs and rather than replace the ends, they just bought new cords--nothing wrong with the wire itself).

I've been looking at IOC and Cyberweld...about the same price for MM210's and MM212's between the two of them (not the same price for the machines, just same price for same machine at different places).

A buddy of mine has a 3035 plugged into a MM210 and he loves it.

IOC's eBay site lists the MM212 at $1425.95 with a full kit. They list the MM212 with 3035 Spool gun and full kit at $2045.77.

The MM210 is listed at $1338.77. I can get HTP's 3035 (called the RSG200-MIL) for $375. Goint this route I could get a nice welder and a spoolgun (with all cables, etc) for $1713.77.....free shipping from both places.

Any problems with that logic that you can see?

Also, I have 2 - 100 powercords that started out as shoreties for USCG facilities and then went into the trash. Kept 'em around for a while and then put my own ends on when I started buying welders

I think it's funny that you and I both think about marina-stuff the same way. I've even thought about buying some new twist-lock plugs and having a small pigtail attached to the Champ10K, but have never bothered. For now one stays in the toolbox on the truck and one stays hanging in the shop. Both will go into the truck as it goes 5 miles down dirt roads to get to the pond two weeks from now. On-site trac-hoe will lift MM210 out of the truck and lower it down the 30% grade of the earthen dam to the foot of the aluminum dock that leads out to the existing flashboard riser pipe (42" dia). This will be after same-said trac-hoe lifts the new 10' section of flashboard into place and holds it while I clamp it down (and I might use a couple of 1/2" bolts/nuts) in place. New pipe will overlap old pipe approximately 12" and new pipe will fit outside old pipe. 2" X 2" channel will be pre-welded in my shop to the new pipe and then new channel will weld to old channel once new pipe is veritcal and in place. Obviously, new pipe will be 11'L and channel will only be 10'L. Will make two welds on pipe joint: inside from old to new and outside from new to old. Two pieces of channel will only be welded on the outside to allow 2 pieces of 2-by lumber to fit side-by-side inside to block water-flow. It's not a seamless application nor plan, but I think it's going to work fine.

I'm guessing it'll take me two or three days to weld the channel to the new pipe in my shop, and that should give me plenty of time/hours to aquaint myself to my new machine and new spool gun.

More suggestions? Thanks for everything so far!

i don't know if the HTP spool gun will work with the MM212 so i cant comment on that. but i can say if you can find a way to get the MM212 do it. i had a chance to run the MM210 and was very pleased with it. found it easy to dial in and surprisingly nice on thin stuff ( 22 gage) even with .030 wire. the MM212 seems to be getting the same reputation as the MM210, i just cant see you being unhappy with it.

                    Clint,

Don't see any way you can go wrong with the MM212 and 3035 Spoolgun. Great setup.

Sounds like a good project you've taken on. Will definitely give you a chance to work with a new machine setup. You did see where Miller offers a 25' extension for the 3035.

Power cords. Sounds like you've got that well in hand. I just mentioned it, because most people either just buy a prefab cord or go to the big box store and buy the wire and put their own ends on. I probably have 8-10 50' 30A cords that were discarded by the previous owners just because the plug is a little melted (generally from trying to run heaters on the boat all winter). Got two nice 60' 6/3 cords for the Sync 250 which came off boats with cablemasters. Cords get a little kink in the last 10' or so and don't feed right. Owner asks for new cord. OK.

We'll be looking for photos once you get that project wrapped up.

IOC is offering a MM210 and a MM212 ?? if i understood that correctly i would go with the MM210 over the MM212. not that anything is wrong with the MM212 just that the 210 looks better IMO and the extra $$ could go to the spool gun fund.
