I have a "sister" in North Carolina that spent a few years at a bird wildlife refuge place. Helped a couple of bald eagles from babies. One of them stayed in the area, built a nest and everything. People still see it till today (4 years).

I stop lots of times to move a turtle from the middle of the road to the side he was aimed for............but I wonder if I was helping or not. What if when I arrived, he had just turned around to to take one last look where he had been........and then I up and move him back.

monte55, I've often wondered what the turtle was thinking when I do the same. I have a retention pond diagonally across the street from my house and a major highway just to the north of me and at least once a month I find a turtle heading towards the highway and I pick him / her up and carry it back to the pond. Sometimes they look at me and I can tell they are greatful for my intervention and sometimes they look at me like "thanks a lot as*hole, now I gotta walk for another half an hour to get back to where I was" Dave

Some years back we had a small turtle that would come up in the morning and crawl up into the dog dish but couldn't eat the dry round dog food. It was to big and would fly out of its mouth. So,.......I would put some on the concrete drive and grind it up with my shoe. He had no problem then. After a while it became common each morning when we would place food out for the dog and rattle the dish, here came the dog and also the turtle out of the flower bed or where ever he was. I'd grind his food and all was good. I have a pic somewhere of my dog and the turtle dining together.

thats cool a wild pet thats still wild, just getting a helping hand. how long did he stay around or is he still a regular at meal times??

its tuff to interact with wild animals and not mess then up in some way, thats why i got the owl back out of my house as soon as he showed the ability to fly around for more than just a few feet or kinda glide/crash to the ground when he jumped off the perch in the cage.
i also tried to not handle him wile he was in the house so as to not tame him for fear he would not be ok once released.

The turtle that ate with the dog was about 10 years ago. The turtle was around for about a year or two. Gone for a year and then came back. We knew it was the same guy because it had a missing part on the right rear of his shell. He /she would take food out of my hand as I would feed it.

Another story: I found a small bird on the ground, .....very weak and slow acting. I have a customer that is an avid bird watcher and very knowledgeable about birds. She said to take an eyedropper and put a drop
of gasoline on the beak as this acts like smelling salts for birds and perks them up. It sure did!! The little bird started shuffling and then took off flying
around the room really fast and after a minute just stopped and hit the floor.
I thought for sure it had died. Upon closer inspection, I realized it had just run out of gas.

                              My bird story.......

I was working on a job in McPherson, KS last year. My hotel was in Hutchinson, KS. On the drive back "home" one afternoon, I saw this little guy standing by the side of the road. He had been hit by a vehicle. I popped a u-turn and pulled over across the road from him. My welding gloves wer handy for giving him a perch and the protective bag for my BWE covered hum nicely for the ride to the zoo. The zoo's manager met me at the front gate and let me help examine him and give him a shot to treat for shock. I took this pic of him with my phone after putting him in a cage in the infirmary.

NICE JOB!!! WELL DONE!!! Little guy looks healthy, but I'd be REALLY scared of him biting me (I still would have tried though, I probably would have worn my welding hood)
