  • Painting Your Tanks?

I got a oxygen tank from a garage sale a few months back. Big tank, nice but ugly as heck. For some reason, the guy thought i would be nice if it was yellow, but I'm not into that....Since this isn't a rental, I want to repaint it. what is the best way? Sand it down, wire wheel with the grinder or chemical gel paint romover like naval jelly? Any ideas or things that might NOT be good?
    thanks in advance

painting a tank is a no-no, most places wont fill a freshly painted tank. they make you get it certified again.
    thanks for the help

I agree with Weld_13. If you paint it they'll wonder why sometimes? Damage, repairs, etc. Have them fill it once and then tell them your going to paint it so it's all on the up and up. It's their a** on the line if they fill a bad tank and something happens.

Sounds like you wouldn't be any worse off if you did paint it since the guy you bought it from painted it.

I don't have anything to offer about how to clean it up, but I thought I would throw out that observation since no one mentioned it already.

                Paint Or Not To Paint

When I Take My Custemer Owned Tankes To Get Them Filled They Trade Them For New Ones And That Is Why We Do Not Paint Them

So If You Do Not Like The Tank You Have "go Fill It"

But There Is The Guys That Paint Flames On There Tankes And
What I Have Heard Is That You Leave Them And They Fill Them Up
And You Get Them The Next Day Or Two

One Last Thing The Sert. On The Tank Is Stamped In To It
And It All So Has A Dot # On It

They Also Had A Valve Recall On Old Tankes Three Years Ago
That Was In Ca. Some Valves Were Over Tightend

This Is One Of The Cool Ideas I Have Had For This And If You
Remember The Beer Raps For Beer Cans Then Think Of A Tank Raps
Or Covers With Custom Paint Jobs On Them

if the paint on it is old you will most likely be ok, its new paint that they are concerned about. they think you did a bondo and paint to cover recent damage. its a bummer but i found out the hard way.
after that i started making tank covers for sale and for all my tanks.
i own my tanks but they still swop them out, i just dont pay a rental fee that the only diference.
it was the wif's idea to make a cover for it, i had brand new welders with ugly old beat up tanks behind them, she is a bit more concernd about the looks then me but i did want to do somthing about the looks of the tanks, some looked like i draged them home. she was already making covers for my welders so why not make one for the tank and another one to protect the gages from over-spray if i paint near them.
alll is good now, they look good and are protected, so my welders stay looking new.
just have your wife make a sleve with some elastic at the top to slide over the tank.

Thanks to all of the reply's !!! This is one of those huge tanks, not the kind I can swap out. As some of you saw, I wasn't diss'n James, just the rules, though I understand why... I'll call them and ask them myself when they open tomorrow, but more than likely, I'll order a cover from James (fun4now).
thanks for your advice and comments
