me and my brother have been thnkin about buildin a yamaha banshee ta ride around the dunes . we were going to buy like a raptor cause im not shure but think the frames are the same just dif. motor and plastic . i was later thinkin about rather than buyin a banshee for at least $1,500 buy a chassis for a banshee or raptor and puttin a motorcycle motor in it (yeh i know overkill). i saw one on ebay when i was lookin for used banshees to modify. i was thinkin to use the 87' model frame because they seem popular and are slightly cheeper. if we bought one wether we did it from the frame up or modified we were gonna put modified a arms on it and change around shock mounts to make it batter ta race in the dunes and softer ride quality and put a streched out rear suspension arm. im wantin ta have good handilin so would be good for dunes but also be good for ridin around in fields to. we might build a frame from round tubing but not likely. we might also use a yamaha blaster. does anyone have pics or ideas on an atv made for this? thanks

you can put anything you want in them the banchee is just a yamaha 350 RD in the quad frame. nothing special about it. the only ones that have anything diferent is the ones with shaft drive or 4WD. you could always buy one frame and use it to build another one so you and your brother both get a toy, insted of haveing to share.

Few things to consider, more than the scope of this text...

Have a banshee, great little vehicle.

Mine is stock, for running in the north woods on the trails, so I did not feel the need to change the dynamics of it.

It has perfect balance, trail riding or running the mogos in the sand on the pipeline. with a little bit of body english and throttle controll, it does what I want it to do. (keeps me out of the tree's)

My point, if you start changing the balance of the bike, more weight forward / back, more power, you will need to consider the vehicles handling, balance, braking, frame strenght, etc.

I would expect in the sand dunes you can get some speed as well as air. The balance would be important for both.

The blaster is a lower hp less expensive machine. The raptor, I thought was a complete redesign with a 4 stroke, very light weight. Have not road one.

You might want to start with some of the atv sites and see what other folks have done.

Doable, just take the time to do the math and engineering. I expect you will learn volumes from a project like that.

(the 350 in the banshee has way more potential than stock. A worked motor will perform extreemy well, and very light weight.)

yeh that would be cool but meens more green$ . might try it though. weve both already got 4wheelers just wanted somethin more....custom . what i would like to do is get one then put everything on it that we would customize like suspension and stuff then build another with a dif. motor. not shure how hard it would be to piece all the stuff together that we wouldnt change brakes,seat,handlebars ect if we were to build from ground up. couple of our uncles have some motorcycle engines that i think are about 80's model 250-about 500cc some yamaha some suzuki as far as i know are in rebuildable if not ok shape because they were stored inside. wonderin if could use the stock radiator on like a 500cc motor? reason bein because of front setup where its put for maximum air flow and would like to keep it there cause dont wanta have ta cram it in somewhere else. here some pics of what would like it ta turn out to be.

yeh i know there be alot a math when changin engines and swing arms and stuff wich is somethin not to take lightly. i would like ta work with a stock engine but makes to be a junkload of money in custom parts. weve owned a blaster before but got stolen . i like em ok just would like some more power. do banshees have reverse? i know the blasters dont at least the one we had.

Have a big bear 350 , use that for all the utility stuff. Like it also.

The stock banshee is a lot more machine than the blaster. Not quite full scale aim it, but can get real close on a tight trail. The blaster is a nice machine, looked at it also, but the banshee was in reach for me so I did it...

I like the idea of your project, see if you can find a few at the bone yard, parts something together. If you are doing it to learn as well as have fun, would be a good way to learn.

If you do not have the math and fab skills, just make sure you get someone involved who understands the math, and fabrication.

If I was looking today, I would get a 4 stroke. It is a pain trail riding with the pre mix, much easier to pull up to the pump and put gas in and drive away. Mixing the oil in while pumping is a pain. Doable, but a pain.

If it was I undertaking such a project, putting that kind of hp between the axles, I would probably use the frame as a template, pick up some chrome molly tube, and have at it. Then you would have the best of both works, light, strong, and know it was done right for the hp you are putting to the ground.

Correct me, the sand runners have the rear axle extended back for stability and the higher speeds?

ive never had the pleaser a tryin it out but as far as i know its stretched out for gettin more of ur power to the ground on take off instead of popin wheelys and stability. and yeh sadly nothin cool is cheap just gives u experience when u make it urself for not as much.

There is a car out there called the lotus 7, do a search on it. A book exists that tells you how to build it. the book is inexpensive and has some good info.

Not what you are looking at doing, but it gives a good walk through on process and fabrication without a fully equiped shop.

im still workin on er but still haven problems with the starter. tried puttin impact to it ta see if that would get it to turn over and maybe set the brushes and get it to start and see if that was the problem but the impact wrench didnt have nearly enough rpms. im gonna try usin a drill but ive only got an air drill cause our dewalt went out a few weeks ago and is gonna take a little while ta replace.

sounds like a good book to look over. i am the werst at serches, not shore if its me or my P.O.S. comp. i dont supose you have a link handy for it or have a few minuits to try to locate it for me???
