  • Old Miller welder?

I 've been looking around the site alot latley learning alot from others post and, desided to join.

First off I have a question I'm looking at this older Miller welder on a local classifieds site and, I have nowIdea what it is nether dose the owner. I was just wondering if anyone hear could help out. I know it's a Miller arc from the pic's but what I don't know is if it's just AC or AC/DC. Also is this welder any good. He's asking $100 for it. Any help would be great thanks.

to me it looks like it might be ac/dc cause of the three lead hookups at the bottom but im not shure. do u have any other pictures? it could also be an inverter cause of the hookups to i think.
    welding...its awsome

Looks like a Miller Thunderbolt 225 -250 amp AC machine. A machine with AC and DC capabillites would probably have more lead terminals. I used to own the ac/dc version, it was a good stick machine for all around uses. $100 isn't a bad price if it comes with the leads. The newer version of that machine costs $389 right here on the Miller site.

        welcome
any chance of better pic's or ask him to read the plate on the back, he should be able to find out if its ac or ac/dcthe lil stick boxes are about indistructable so if it sparks it bound to be fine.
        thanks for the help

Definitely straight AC. It will have a work plug and an AC high and AC low output plug.

He!! of a good deal! Old miller thunderbolt straight AC hi/low and work plugs. I got shocked working on one of those before. I was cleaning one out once and replacing the terminals with cam lock conectors when some dumbazz decided to plug it in! (you know who you are if you ever read this.) My arm was limp for 2 days before I regained fealing in it. It was wired for 220 so I was prety lucky thats all I ended up with.

I'm sure you exercised discretion but there's no jury on earth that would have convicted you if you did what that guy deserved.

Good reminder for everybody though -- lockout/tagout. Most guys I've worked with are careful of others but there's always at least one on site without a clue. Ah crap, I guess I've done my share of stupid things. OK, forgive and forget.

Phila, you're absolutely right. Lock it out, tag it out, or wrap a whole roll of duct tape around the plug. What ever it takes to keep the equipment from being energized.

Getting zapped by welding current is one thing. (Reletively low voltage, high amperage). Getting zapped by recepticle power is a killer. ( high voltage, reletively low amps) Not something to toy around with. As for fighting words, if somebody plugged a machine in I was working on internaly, I'd punch them out, just for being that stupid.

I'm 5'8", 140#. He's 6'4" and 180#+. I dont think so. Now that would be stupider than what he did. Besides as others have stated so clearly I should have made some atempt to lock it out so it is partly my fault. But I'm still pissed at him!
